I along with many of his former students from Hicksville High School fondly remember Jerry as a wonderful teacher. If one visits the Facebook site "You Know You're From Hicksville If" you will find that notice was posted and numerous favorable comments were received.

I remember Mr. Shanley as a kind and gentle man with a good sense of humor and a willingness to make English fun. He even chaperoned our trip to Europe. As an educator myself I often model myself after him when teaching my classes.  I sure wish I would've had the chance to let him know that. Thanks Mr. Shanley and Rest in Peace. Gerry's classmates, Regis High SchoolClass of 1952, remember him with great esteem and affection. Brilliant, witty, and always upbeat, Gerry was a great friend to many in our class.

My deepest sympathy.  He was a wonderful teacher.

A WONDERFUL teacher and a kind gentle man. When I confided in him about not having a date for the prom, he told me how pretty I was and kidded that HE would take me to the prom. And so he signed my yearbook, "to the pretty girl I almost took to the prom."  I will always remember his kindness and his excellence as an educator. A great loss to all I am sure. I had Mr. Shanley for English many many years ago....I remember him as very gentle and always had a smile. He was a gift to those of us who attended HHS.  Margaret Ort Eaton

Mr. Shanley was definitely not your mainstream English teacher. He made us think out of the box. In one instance, after reading Faust, students became characters in the play and participated in a mock trial depicted in the story.  He made learning exciting. I attended my 50th HHS reunion a month ago, and Mr. Shanley's name came up quite often. He definitely was unforgettable. May he rest in peace.
