Sadly ironic!  Exactly 25 years ago -- July 5, 1993 -- my wife went into labor and had to be taken to the hospital to give birth to our daughter, Maria.  But we could not leave the house until my wife's Mom arrived, to look after our son, Joseph, who was then not quite 3 years old.  We waited for a long time . . . but we had no idea why she was running late (cell phones were not as ubiquitous as they are now).  Finally, we couldn't wait any longer . . . I called Joan (who lived right next door) and told her our situation.  And even though it was 7 o'clock in the morning, she came right over and we were able to go on our way.  Renate's Mom finally arrived a bit later . . . she was held up at a railroad crossing.  But Joan saved the day, and two hours later our daughter, Maria was born.

So "Aunt Joan" (as our kids always knew her) will always be a part of our lives!  

My sincere condolences to the family . I truly enjoyed talking to Joan . She was a very special person. Joan was a very hard worker . I have lived around the corner  from her for 45 years. She was a fighter and never gave up. I loved watching her go for her walks . I would stop her yo talk . I will  truly miss her. Rest In Peace.
