October 6, 1944 – June 7, 2026
Born on October 6,1944 to Albert and Ruth Humann, Rich was a lifelong member of the Hicksville community. His early years took him, his sister Nancy, and brother Peter, from Lee Avenue to Hicksville High School, where he was a strong athlete and baseball player. That is where he would graduate in 1962 and he would meet his bride-to-be Elizabeth (Bette) Weldon. Married on November 25, 1964, Rich and Bette started their lives on Summer Lane, where they would grow their family with children Lisa, Richard, Gina, and Lori. Over the decades, his dedication to his family and his community flourished. His lifelong 37-year career took him from Letter Carrier, where he mastered the gift of gab, to Postmaster at the Jericho Post Office.
Although he was very proud of his accomplishments and children, he was equally proud of his grandchildren. You couldn’t keep him away from every game, recital, graduation, or concert of his seven grandchildren, James, Cassandra, Ryan, Jessica, Caitlyn, Sara, and Emilia. He loved to enjoy all of his children and grandchildren for who they are, what they have achieved, and who they have the chance to become.
His passion towards his Hicksville community was crystal clear. He was an active member of the Evangelical Church of St. Stephen, and a 60-year member of the Hicksville Fire Department, Volunteer Hose Company 4. There are too many stories to tell, but at his heart, volunteering his time to support and protect Hicksville was what mattered most. Rich was elected to the Board of Water Commissioners of the Hicksville Water District in 1983, where he served his community for the next 23 years.
He loved the Mets, Jets, Islanders, and Knicks. He joked that rooting for his favorite New York teams built character, because they rarely won, yet he always stuck with them. In actuality, his deep love of family, his selflessness, his generosity and his work ethic are the true measures of character, and he was loaded with real character.
With his passing on June 7, 2026, Rich reunites with all his family and friends that have passed before him. He is survived by his wife Bette, his brother and sister Nancy and Peter (Maryann), his sons and daughters Lisa (Jimmy), Richard (Patty), Gina (Rob) and Lori (Lenny), his grandchildren James (Jenna), Cassandra (Bryan), Ryan (Cassie), Jessica (Nick), Caitlyn (Ben), Sara, and Emilia, his nephews and nieces. His family and his community are his legacy and his life. He will be missed, and he will be celebrated
