Robert D. Mahoney, known affectionately as Bob, passed away on April 2, 2024, at the age of 83 in Hicksville, NY. He was the beloved husband of Frances Mahoney. Bob shared 44 beautiful years of marriage with Fran. Cherished father to Robert (Bobby) and Caroline (Bunny) Mahoney and an adored stepfather to Doreen Jansson (Pete Jansson), George and Robert Rogan, and Tracey Sanok (Paul Sanok). Bob was the cherished grandfather of Noelle and Gabrielle Gelesko, and Amanda and Justin Sanok, Ramona Smith & Angelina Pitelli. He was the darling brother of Gerard Mahoney (Cynthia), Mary Kopke (Bob Kopke), and Kevin Mahoney (Bonnie).
A dedicated professional, Bob spent over 45 years as an overhead Lineman, starting his career with Lilco and retiring from National Grid. He found fulfillment in passing on his expertise as an instructor at the Lilco Lineman's Academy, specializing in pole climbing and high voltage safety. Bob took pride in his career, leaving behind a legacy of service and knowledge.
Beyond his professional life, Bob was a passionate outdoorsman and hunter. He pursued deer, turkey, and small game with zeal, employing various methods including rifle, pistol, black powder, shotgun, compound bow, and crossbow. His favorite hunting grounds were the Shawangunk Mountains and the Adirondacks, where he shared many memorable moments with his brother Rod. Bob and Fran enjoyed the tranquility of nature together, hiking, camping, and exploring both the Shawangunk and Adirondack mountains.
Bob's adventurous spirit extended to his travels, enjoying vacations with his family in Lake George, camping in the Catskills, and exploring destinations like Wyoming, Ireland, Scotland, and Alaska. He was a devoted grandfather, imparting his wisdom through fishing trips, games, and teaching his grandchildren to drive.
Bob's life will be honored with a memorial service on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Homes, 125 Old Country Rd, Hicksville, New York 11801.
Bob Mahoney leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
