Alton McKinley Wood

Mr. Alton McKinley Wood, 81, of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Forsyth Medical Center.

A resident of this area all of his life, Mr. Wood was born on April 28, 1936, a son to the late Eli and Rosa Burchette Wood. For over 30 years he had worked at RJ Reynolds and also worked for Home Security Life Insurance Company. He was a member of Union Cross Moravian Church where he served as a greeter and was active in the Oak View Lions Club. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, and vacationing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Lou Hedgecock Wood; Willa Grey’s son, Mark Hayes; siblings, Laduska “Woodie” Toolan, Keaster Burchette, Vaughan Wood, Harold Wood, Clyde Wood, and Christine Lupo; and brother-in-law, Buddy Ussery.

Surviving are his wife, Willa Grey Wood of the home; son, Wayne Wood and wife Dianne of Lexington; two daughters, Melinda Bailey and husband Robert and Vickie Wood, all of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Justin Wood and wife Alex, Jason Wood, and Shannon Tinsbloom and husband Charles; six great grandchildren, Tyler, Jonathan, and Natalie Wood and Destiny, Kalista, and Serenity Tinsbloom; Willa Grey’s son, Wesley Hayes and wife Carolyn; Willa Grey’s two grandchildren, Tanner and Kent Hayes; brother, Ronnie Wood; four sisters, Frances Johnson, Sally Barnhardt and husband Ed, Lois Cutler and significant other Richard, and Glenda Billings and husband Fred; sister-in-law, Pat Ussery; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Monday, April 23, 2018 at Union Cross Moravian Church with Pastor Russ Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Union Cross Moravian Church, 4295 High Point Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

We haven't known Alton very long we frist met him at the Almost Home Group. When I placed my wife Tammy there I was so worried. They sat my wife beside Alton, he immediately made her feel at home. In the short time we knew him , he touch our life greatly. God Bless you "Woody" you will be greatly missed .

Uncle Alton has always been a prime example of what a man should be. A good husband, father & friend. A man of faith, always kind and always a smile on his face. He will be greatly missed and never ever forgotten.

So sorry for your loss, We shared so many memories as neighbors for so many years. I can always remember Mr. Wood always had a smile when ever he would great you and I will always have fond memories of that, such a great person that will be truly missed.
