

Edith Vance Mattocks, 94, a resident of Friends Homes, Greensboro, and formerly of High Point, died January 23, 2014. A memorial service will be held at Jamestown Friends Meeting on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation to follow the service.
The youngest child of the late Charles Winston and Alta Pegram Vance, Edith was born September 6, 1919 in Browns Summit. She was predeceased by her 4 brothers, Ralph, Wilbur, Virgil and Bill Vance, and her sister, Alene Vance Barrier.
Edith graduated from High Point High School in 1936 and from High Point College in 1940. In 1941 she married James R. Mattocks, who predeceased her on September 10, 2010.
Following graduation from High Point College, Edith was a teacher in the Farmer community and then she opened the Farmland Kindergarten in south High Point. Edith spent most of her life concerned with education and with helping the disadvantaged and powerless. She served on several community boards throughout the years. A long time board member of Mobile Meals of High Point, Edith served tirelessly on the screening committee. As a member of the Board of Directors of Developmental Day Care, she helped in upgrading standards and maintaining high quality care in programs in High Point, and as a member of the Guilford County Nursing Home Advisory Board, she assisted the families of the elderly with problems of care in nursing home facilities.
Edith was a long time member of Springfield Friends Meeting, where she served on various committees and held positions of leadership. She was a past president of the High Point Camelia Garden Club and the Catesby Bird Club. She also served on the High Point Environmental Board.
In 1985 the High Point Human Relations Commission named Edith and her husband Jim “High Pointer of the Year” for their many contributions to the community.
She is survived by 3 sons, James R. Mattocks, Jr. of Greensboro, Clarence V. Mattocks (Martha) of High Point, and Thomas B. Mattocks (Becky) of Greensboro, 5 grandchildren, Wendy Mattocks, Robyn M. Huffstetler (Seth), David, Steven and Michael Mattocks, and two great-grandchildren, Eliza and Luke Huffstetler.
