Elizabeth “Lib” Parsons Whitesides, 102, passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of May 10th, 2024. She resided in the High Point area for over 75 years.She was predeceased by her parents, Agatha Calloway Parsons and Edmond Blackburn Parsons; her husband of nearly 55 years, George Whitesides, Sr.; and her sisters Louise Parsons Hepler, Carolyn Parsons Charles, and Madge Parsons Smith.
She is survived by her son, George Whitesides, Jr. (and wife Susan), her grandchildren: Holland Whitesides (and husband Andy Bryant), Julia Whitesides, and George Henry Whitesides III (and wife Ellen). She is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Beatrice Bryant, Corva Bryant, George Henry Whitesides IV, Linnea Bryant, and James William Whitesides II.
Lib was born on February 21, 1922 in Wilkes County, NC. Her childhood was spent in Ashe and Wilkes Counties, and she graduated from Millers Creek High School in 1937. She attended Appalachian State Teachers College from 1937 to 1941 graduating with a bachelor's degree in education. She taught the first grade for over 15 years, primarily in NC. Lib continued her education by earning a Master’s Degree in education from Women’s College, now UNCG. After she retired from teaching, she helped her husband manage his truck leasing business.
She married George Whitesides Sr. on July 4, 1941. Their long, devoted marriage and quality of love for each other continues to be an inspiration to their family. They became world travellers and lifelong learners. Lib was fiercely independent, living until the end of her life in her own home.
Lib had a quick sense of humour that endeared her to her friends, extended family, and caregivers. She loved her nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
