Ms. Evelyn Meredith Davis, age 96, passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at the Randolph Hospice House.
Born November 14, 1928 in Davidson County, Evelyn was one of 8 children born to Lenora Blanche Jones and Darius Ernest Meredith. She was the fourth born in a family of 5 boys and 3 girls, two of whom died as children. Evelyn often said her mother was a saint having to raise, feed and clothe such a large family. The Meredith family were molded and bonded by all they lived through together, sharing a way of life we won't know again. Family and the farm she grew up on were everything to Evelyn. She was able to live out her almost 97 years on the land where she was born. She valued and kept up with her many close friends through the years. Evelyn was a caregiver her whole life, sacrificing to aid family and friends in their time of need. Her wise counsel encouraged many.
Evelyn's life exemplified service to her community. After graduating from Hasty High School followed by Ashmore Business College, she worked in the law office of Carlis Kennedy in Thomasville before joining her husband to run the Harold C. Davis Funeral Home. Afterwards, she worked at Guilford Technical Community College as an executive secretary. She also worked as a furniture manufacturers rep during High Point Markets with Martinsville Novelty for 14 years, followed by 20 years with E.J. Victor. During her working years, she continued serving in civic organizations and was Exchangette of the Year 1972-1973 and as well as High Point Woman's Club Woman of the Year in 1973. Evelyn was an active member of High Point Friends Meeting for many years before becoming a current member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, where she served selflessly in many ways.
Evelyn was an accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed decorating her home along with shopping for and collecting vintage and antique pieces. Her keen eye supplied her booth at the Thomasville Emporium, where she was a vendor into her early 90's. After retirement, Evelyn got to travel the world, going on over 30 overseas trips, visiting 5 continents. She visited great landmarks like the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids, St. Petersburg, Russia, the Roman Colosseum and the Holy Land, which was her favorite.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by sisters, Rosene Trexler, Mary Mitchell; brothers, Darrell Meredith, Rob Meredith, Barkley Meredith, D. C. Meredith and James Hoke Meredith.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Marcia Newton (Fred); two sons, H. Leigh Davis and H. Sidney Davis; four grandchildren, Philip Newton (Kimmie), Laura Newton (Rick), Blake Davis and Bryce Davis (Abby); two great-grandchildren, Ryker Newton and Michael Davis; sister in law, Bea Meredith and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Evelyn's life will be Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 3 p.m. in the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church Chapel, 1225 Chestnut Dr., High Point, NC. The family will receive friends in the Asbury Room one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. Evelyn will lie in state at Sechrest-Davis Funeral Home Friday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.
