Felicia Whitfield-Ferguson, 62, was a beloved mother, sister, niece, cousin, aunt, caregiver, and friend whose presence left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Born on March 15, 1964, in Stamford, Connecticut, Felicia grew up surrounded by her close-knit family, where the foundation of family, love, and looking out for one another became an integral part of who she was.
On October 24, 2026, Felicia's life was tragically taken from her in an act of violence. Her passing has left an unimaginable void in the hearts of those who loved her. While the circumstances of her death are heartbreaking, they will never define her story. Her life was so much more than the way it ended. It was a life filled with determination, generosity, laughter, fierce love, and an unwavering commitment to the people she held dear.
Felicia was predeceased by her parents, Sheila Whitfield-Snell, Daniel Snell, and Jimmie Whitfield.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory, including her two devoted daughters, Ashley Poprilo and Shelby Ferguson; her dear brother, Charles (Muzzy) Whitfield and loving sister, Tanya Hinton. She was also an adored aunt to Sheena "Sheboop", Jordan "Pize", Brandon and Dior along with her great nieces and nephews, James "Pop", A’aden, Katileia, Jasmine, Juliana, and Bobby, along with numerous other nieces and nephews, extended family members, and countless individuals who considered her family.
Above all else, Felicia was a devoted mother to her two daughters, Ashley and Shelby, who were the center of her world. She was a strong-willed woman who knew what she wanted out of life and expected nothing less than the best from herself and those she loved. She raised her daughters to recognize their worth, pursue their dreams, and never settle for less than their full potential. She worked tirelessly to provide them with opportunities, including making tremendous sacrifices to send them to private school because she wanted to ensure that no barrier would stand between her girls and their dreams.
One of Felicia's greatest sources of pride was knowing that she had raised two daughters who had earned multiple degrees and were building flourishing careers in higher education. Their accomplishments were a reflection of the values she instilled in them: hard work, perseverance, ambition, and the courage to pursue even the biggest dreams.
She was especially looking forward to witnessing her youngest daughter Shelby graduate from Elon University School of Law. Felicia had spent much of Shelby's life listening to her talk about her dream of becoming a lawyer. She encouraged Shelby to take that dream seriously, supported her decision to apply to law school, and stood beside her throughout the challenges that came with the journey. Whether offering encouragement or simply being a listening ear when Shelby needed to vent about the difficulties of school, Felicia was always there. She was excited to see her daughter grow into the courageous woman who was finally reaching for a dream she had talked about for so many years. Knowing that she will not be physically present to celebrate this milestone is an especially painful reminder of how much more life Felicia deserved to experience. Yet Shelby will carry her mother's encouragement and belief in her with her every step of the way.
Her love was found in both the big things and the little things. It was in the countless conversations about everything from pets to what would be served for dinner. It was in the last-minute trips to the store to purchase supplies for school projects, even when her daughters should have given her more notice. It was in making sure they had everything they needed, often putting their needs before her own. That was Felicia: a mother who showed her love through action, sacrifice, and a determination to make things happen, no matter what it took.
Felicia's nurturing spirit extended far beyond her own children. She was a loving aunt and a mother figure to countless other children throughout her life. She frequently opened her home and her heart to children whose families were unable to care for them, providing support, stability, and a place where they could feel safe and loved. She never needed a title to show someone they mattered. If she loved you, she showed up for you.
A woman of many talents and unmistakable personality, Felicia loved cooking, shopping, and decorating her home. She had an eye for making things beautiful and could always find a way to add a little sparkle to her surroundings. Her home reflected her personality: full of warmth, character, and the special touches that made it hers. She was also an incredible cook, often preparing meals for others and seemingly incapable of receiving a bad review. Feeding people was just another way she expressed her love.
She enjoyed shopping and sipping wine while people-watching with her daughters, especially during visits to the boardwalk with her closest friends. She appreciated the simple pleasures of life: good company, a little indulgence, and the opportunity to spend time with the people she loved.
In her final months, Felicia was especially excited about two upcoming milestones: planning her oldest daughter Ashley's wedding in April and looking forward to Shelby's law school graduation. She immersed herself in the tiny details of Ashley's wedding, excited to help bring her daughter's special day to life. She had so much love and excitement invested in both celebrations. It is heartbreaking that she will not be physically present to witness these moments, but her daughters will carry her love, influence, and the memories of all the plans they shared with her as they move forward.
Felicia had a quiet presence, but a personality that left a lasting impression. She was just as comfortable sharing a conversation with a dear friend tucked away in the corner of a room as she was bringing a group of people together to laugh over funny memories and familiar stories. She had a way of making people feel connected, often turning ordinary moments into memories that would be retold for years. Her humor, quick wit, and unmistakable personality made time spent with her special. She was feisty and strong-willed, never one to take nonsense, but beneath that toughness was a woman with a generous heart who cared deeply for the people in her life. She didn't need to command a room to be remembered. Her presence was enough.
Her absence will be felt in the everyday moments: the phone calls, the conversations, the meals, the shopping trips, the laughter, the advice, and even the moments when she insisted on having things her way. These are the pieces of her that her family and friends will hold close forever.
Though her life was taken far too soon and under devastating circumstances, the love she gave cannot be taken away. Her daughters will carry the lessons she taught them, the strength she instilled in them, and the countless sacrifices she made to give them the best possible life. The children she cared for will remember the woman who made room for them. Her family and friends will remember her unmistakable spirit, her generosity, and the way she made a house feel like home.
Felicia's life was defined by how fiercely she loved, how generously she gave, and how deeply she cared. She was a mother to many, a sister, an aunt, a friend, a protector to those in need, and a woman who left her mark on the lives she touched.
She deserved more time. More celebrations. More shopping trips. More wine and conversations on the boardwalk. More family gatherings. More opportunities to watch her daughters' dreams unfold. More graduations, more weddings, and more moments to be the proud mother she always was.
Yet the time she was given was filled with a love that will continue to live on throughout the countless lives she touched.
She will forever be loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten.
