“Paw Paw Harry”
Harry Hamilton Aylor, age 98, died peacefully at the Hospice Home in
High Point.
Harry was born March 1, 1913, the son of Myrtle and Lucian Aylor in
Culpepper, VA. he grew up on the family farm there. He worked for the
Virginia State Highway Department, then moved as a young man to
Washington, D.C., where he worked in the carpentry trade and was a
driver and guide for the DC transit authority. While there he met his
wife Edna who preceded him in death in 2006. Edna and Harry moved to
High Point in 1956, where Harry owned and operated Aylor’s Esso until
1975. Their soon-to-be best friends Letha and LB Hill moved next door to
them and made them part of the Hill family and a second set of parents
to Laura and Ben.
Harry was an expert gardener. He built and operated two greenhouses.
Selling and donating azaleas, camellia and rhododendrons thoughout the
community.
He was a man of integrity and generosity. An animal and wildlife lover,
always enjoying his birds and squirrels.
Surviving are sons Robert Aylor and wife JoAnn, and Harry Aylor, Jr. and
wife Mary of Southport. Also surviving are Laura King of Jamestown, Andy
and Katie King of Raleigh, Ben and Marti Hill, Elizabeth Hill, Rob Hoyt
and Luke Hill, all of Madison.
Family request that memorials be made to Hospice of the Piedmont and
wishes to thank the entire staff of Hospice for their loving care.
Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday at Sechrest Funeral
Service, E. Lexington Avenue. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
