Born February 8, 1927 to Mary Pauline and Braudis Leonard, Dusty was a lifelong resident of High Point. He attended Duke University and left to join the Navy in World War II. He returned to UNC Chapel Hill where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and earned his Pharmacy license in 1950. Dusty then returned to High Point to join his father at Leonard's Drug Store where he practiced pharmacy for 50 years, or as he liked to say, he not only dispensed prescriptions, but was a dispenser of health information to the public. Leonard's, founded in 1932, was a community destination and as many of their loyal customers knew, happiness was buying candy at Leonard's. He continued his career in the Guilford County Health Department and the High Point Memorial Hospital out patient clinic, where he remained a volunteer after his retirement.
Dusty was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church where he served on numerous committees and as Chairman of the Board of Stewards. He was a member of Numa F Reid Lodge #344 A.F. and A.M. and also served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the city of High Point. He was an avid aviator and wing hunter and member of Emerywood Country Club and the High Point Quadrille.
He married his college sweetheart, Marion Virginia Owen (Penny) in 1948 who predeceased him in 2004. He is survived by his daughters, Gail Lamm and husband Averette of Raleigh and Jane Johnson and husband Richard of Greensboro; grandchildren Katherine Gorrell, Mitchell Lamm, Steadman Lanier, Beau Johnson, Holly Johnson, Porter Johnson and 10 great grandchildren. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to his caregivers, Gracie Setzer, Mike Brower and Hobert, Necy, Michelle, Clara, and Mini.
The service will be held on Sunday, April 7 at First United Methodist Church, 512 North Main Street, High Point at 2:00 pm and visitation will follow in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Hospice, First United Methodist Church, or the charity one's choice.
