

Homer Lee Smith of High Point passed away peacefully on February 5, 2011 at The Hospice Home of High Point. Homer was born in Sumter, SC on December 30, 1928. He joins his parents the Reverend Wm. L. Smith and Chattie Ritter Smith along with sisters Margie Mae and Daphne in a place where there is no suffering nor sorrow. He leaves behind a family who loved him very much and had the opportunity to tell him so on a daily basis. We are left with many wonderful memories. Homer had a wonderful sense of humor and his quick wit and genuine love of people were felt by everyone who knew him. Homer grew up in a home full of love and faith and was a charter member of Friendly Baptist Church.
Homer attended Jamestown High School where he was the captain of the football team as well as a standout player on the baseball team. He attended High Point College(HPU) on
a baseball scholarship and from there he went to work in veneer sales with The Dean Company for 48 years. He met and made many friends in the furniture industry and was known
for his honesty and integrity. He was a past President of the High Point Y Men's Club and coached in the midget league for many years. He received the volunteer coaching award from the
High Point Jaycees in 1966. Homer loved the game of golf. He was a member of Sedgefield Country Club for 45 years. He truly missed not being able to play because of declining health, not
to mention being unable to see his many friends. Homer did enjoy a round of golf with Sam Snead before hanging up his clubs.
Homer leaves behind his wife of 59 years Tess Gardner Smith, sons H.Lee Smith, Jr.(Ann), Steve(MaryAnne), Kenny(Amy), Mark(Jill), brother Wm. Lafayette Smith,Jr.(Marge), sisters Mary E. "Betty" Safrit(Bob),
Jewell Wall(Richard), Janet Hughes, grandchildren Trey, Lee-Ann, Andy, Kendall, Jodi, Connor and Caroline. He also leaves behind canine Hamilton.
Visitation will be at Sechrest Funeral Service on Monday from 6-7:30 PM. The funeral service will be held at Green Street Baptist Church at 11:00am on Tuesday with burial at Guilford Memorial Park. The family wishes to express appreciation to Hospice for its compassionate care.
