Kathelene "Kat" Stiles Cheves, 94, was called home peacefully in her sleep by her heavenly Father, Monday, July 12, 2021.

Kat was born in Swain County, NC June 18, 1927, a daughter of the late Robert and Mintie Ammons Stiles. She moved to High Point at a young age and met and married her husband of fifty-four years, Jay Cheves. Kat enjoyed a long career in the food service industry, having worked at the Plantation Supper Club and retiring from Holiday Inn Four Seasons, serving as banquet manager. She enjoyed camping with her friends and family as a member of the High Point Sundowner's Camping Club.

Kat lived life to the fullest and conquered her bucket list during her eightieth year to include skydiving, zip lining in Belize, parasailing and a hot air balloon ride. She spent many happy years at Ocean Isle Beach where she made many special friends and was a member of the Shallotte Presbyterian Church. Kat mowed fourteen yards for her neighbors well into her eighty's! Her passion was to collect food for the pantry in Shallotte.

Kat loved to entertain all her family and friends. Her house was always the spot where folks would gather. She was preceded in death by her husband Jay in 2001, six siblings, and son in law, Bobby Craven.

Surviving are three daughters, Donna McLauchlin (Mike), Laura Craven and Lisa Rumph (Kenny); two sons, Ron Cheves (Julie) and Robert Cheves (Flor); ten Grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 2 p.m at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery by Rev. John Causey. The family will receive friends at Sechrest-Davis Funeral Home, 976 Phillips Ave., High Point Thursday from 5 until 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Brunswick County Family Assistance, PO Box 1551, Shallotte, NC 28459. There will be a memorial service at Shallotte Presbyterian Church on August 19, 2021 at 2 p.m.. Online condolences may be made at SechrestDavisPhillipsAvenue.com.

Kat loved her family tremendously and told them as often as she could. Her passing completes the final check on her bucket list and she has moved on to bigger and better adventures.

I've known her since 1954. Always a smile and a hand out to help you out. She and Jay helped me thru a tough time in 1962, I have never forgotten and still can't thank them enough. She is with Jay and my Mom, Mary (her very good friend) I'm sure giving them a smile. Job well done my friend, job well done.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences are being sent to you all. As we say, Kat had a long good run. I have known Kat since I was a small child. I used to go over and play with Donna at the barn. Kat was always so soothing and calm as I remember. I was so fond of her. She was our Girl Scout leader, and I learned much from her. She always had a smile to give, as well as love. Her 90th birthday party she clogged for us. What a truly inspiring woman, and she lived life to its fullest. She instilled great values into her family, an example we all should follow. I'm sure God is enjoying her company now. I'll never forget you. Love, Shirley

From the 1st day I met Kat, at Mike & Donna’s pre wedding gathering, she made all of us feel like her family. Having Kat as his ‘mom’ was truly a Blessing. She was a wonderful, energetic & all giving person. All who knew her were Blessed. We’ll miss her till we meet again in our Father’s home.

At one point in my young life, when Laura and I were best friends and giggly little girls, around seventh grade, Kat was like a second mother to me - a loving, comforting presence. She was always ready with a laugh and smile. I looked forward to her home cooking. My love goes out to Laura, Lisa, and Donna.

What an inspiration Kat was for all of us. We so enjoyed her back yard bar-be-ques and taking her to lunch. When we weren't at Ocean Isle she mowed our lawn for years. Kat was such a positive, thoughtful person. We were blessed to have seen her the last time that she was at Ocean Isle. Kat will be missed but we have such fond memories.

We were Kat's back door neighbors in Ocean Isle. Meeting Kat and watching her mow lawns well into her late 70's inspired me. I knew then, that my goal was to live a long and healthy life, just as Kat did. Her zest for living was infectious. We will miss her greatly!
