Linda was born and raised in Altoona, PA, the daughter of the late Thomas and Esther Nale Lockard. At age 12, the family moved to Winston Salem where she graduated with honors from RJ Reynolds High School. Linda graduated in 1963 from Lenoir Rhyne College, where she was on the dean's list all four years. She retired from Shadybrook Elementary after 25 years of service as their front office administrator. Linda was preceded in death by her son, Dr. Loren McCarter, P.H.D. and a brother, Thomas Lockard, Jr. She was a most loving and caring mother to her two sons, Luther and Loren. Linda was very close to her sister Bonnie and they had many joyful times together.
Surviving are son, Luther McCarter; a grandson, Calum McCarter; a sister, Bonnie Newman and her husband David; a niece, Joy Bowen and her husband Will, great nephews, Cross and Thomas Bowen; daughter in law, Aisle McCarter; a sister in law, Pam Lockard Parker and nephew, Shawn Lockard.
A Celebration of Linda's Life will be held Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 1 p.m. in the Sechrest-Davis Funeral Chapel, 1301 E. Lexington Ave. by Chaplin Craig Walker. Burial at Oaklawn Memorial will be private. The family will receive friends at the funeral Wednesday from 12 noon until the service.
