Martha Davis (Faison) Hawley

Colfax - Martha Faison Hawley died Saturday, May 12, 2018. She was born in Faison, NC, to James Elias and Lena Lineberger Faison on October 31, 1925. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband of 56 years, William (Bill) Hawley. Martha is survived by her children, Ellen Hawley Foster and husband, Tom of High Point, Liza Hawley of Philadelphia, PA, and Faison Hawley and wife, Lisa of High Point; by four grandchildren, Cameron Foster Deese and husband, Chad, Kathryn Foster, Olivia Hawley, and Sam Hawley; also two great-grandsons, Trystan and Finnlay William Deese. She is also survived by her sister, Jane Faison of Colfax, NC, and nieces and nephews.
Martha graduated from Peace College (William Peace University) in 1944, UNC-CH in 1946; she received her Master’s in Social Work from Tulane University in 1950. After marrying Bill in 1954, they lived in Chicago, IL, and Colorado Springs, CO, before settling in High Point in 1960.
Along with Dr. John Bridgers and others, Martha was involved in establishing the Developmental Evaluation Clinic of High Point in 1965. She was especially proud of the work they did evaluating and servicing developmentally challenged children and young adults in the community. Martha was head of the Social Work department of the High Point Memorial (Regional) Hospital from 1978 until it moved into its new facility in 1985. She was also instrumental in creating Hospice of the Piedmont; writing the grant to establish the High Point chapter and serving on its board.
Martha became involved with the local League of Women Voters and was president of the High Point Democratic Women in 1971. Along with numerous others, she assisted in developing Mobile Meals of High Point in the early 1970’s. She and Bill were very active with the organization for many years.
A memorial service for Martha will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr., High Point, NC 27262 or Mobile Meals of High Point.
