

Martha Jones Sechrest, age 86, passed away on Thursday, October 23 at High Point Regional Hospital after several years of declining health. She was born in Randolph County on January 19, 1928, to Allen Frank and Bessie Lee Jones, the twelfth of their fifteen children. She graduated from Trinity High School and Jones Business College. Martha was a teaching assistant with High Point City Schools for 22 years until her retirement in 1985, working in Special Education with children of special needs.
On April 25, 1947, Martha married Gilbert “Red” Sechrest, who preceded her in death in 2005 after 58 years of marriage. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997 with a party attended by all of their friends and family.
Martha was a long-time member of Emerywood Baptist Church. She was a volunteer with Mobile Meals, and for many years after her retirement, she was a volunteer at High Point Regional Hospital.
Martha was preceded in death by eight brothers and three sisters. She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Sechrest Hedgecock of High Point; two grandchildren, Lori Hedgecock LaBor (husband Tom) of High Point and Albert Hunt Horne of Ramseur; one great-granddaughter, Reagan Elizabeth LaBor; three step-great-grandchildren, Aleeza, Amber and Jed Quilit; two sisters, Alese Harris of Archdale and Jewel Farlow of Sophia; one brother, Walter Jones (wife Jo) of Thomasville; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Sechrest of Greensboro and Doris Sechrest of Madison Heights, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
Martha was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was loved by many people for her kind heart and gentle nature. She was especially blessed to have loving and caring neighbors who were always there when she needed them; and sisters and a brother who were incredible gifts from God.
There will be a celebration of Martha’s life on Monday, October 27 at 3:00 p.m. at Emerywood Baptist Church, 1300 Country Club Drive, High Point, with Dr. Robert Ferguson officiating. The family will receive friends in the Gathering Room at the church following the service, and at other times at the home.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the charity of one’s choice.
