HIGH POINT - Mae Hogan Hancock Terry, resident of Pennybyrn of Maryfield in High Point NC, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2018 at the age of 101. She was born August 23, 1916 in Star NC, the youngest of five children and the only daughter of Monnie and Frank Hogan. She was preceded in death by her parents and her four brothers.
Mae married The Rev. Dr. Ernest D. Hancock in 1940, and they made their home in Star beside Mae’s family home. Together, they had three children. Their ministry to the community expanded its reach through original publications, including Poems of Comfort compiled by Mae prior to Ernest’s death in 1961. Mae married Arthur M. Terry in 1969, and they made their home in High Point, NC. Arthur passed in 1987.
Mae was an avid flower lover and enjoyed gardening. Friends and those who were confined to their homes were beneficiaries of flowers and plants from her extensive gardens. Many brides of High Point had their photos taken in Mae’s beautiful rose garden.
Mae was a member of the First Baptist Church of High Point, the Ideal Sunday School Class, and the Radiant Club. She helped with mobile meals and served on many church committees. She was also a member of the Wayside Garden Club and Catsby Bird Club. Mae was an active member of the High Point Woman's Club, serving as Club Chaplain and Trustee. She was selected Club Woman of the Year in 1979. Mae was a loving inspiration for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; and the many others who were blessed to know her.
Mae was predeceased by her son Philip Ernest Hancock and her grandson Shannon Jay Hancock. She is survived by her daughter Sylvia Hancock Ussery and husband Robert of High Point; her daughter Gaylene Hancock Rice Piper of Durham; and her daughter-in-law Wanda Saunders Hancock of Greensboro; grandchildren Deana Hancock Adams and husband Rick; Monnie Ussery; Lea Ussery Dixon; Renee Rice Snyderman and husband Ralph; and Philip Rice and wife Janet; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Sechrest Funeral Service, 1301 E. Lexington Avenue, High Point NC from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Tuesday, March 20th, 2018.
There will be a service at 2:00pm Wednesday, March 21st, 2018 at Dover Baptist Church, 2527 Dover Church Road, Seagrove NC.
It was Mae’s request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to First Baptist Church of High Point, 409 N. Main Street, High Point, NC 27260; or to Dover Baptist Church, 2527 Dover Church Road, Seagrove, NC 27341.
