Libby Gurney, one half of the rock that is our family, died Friday, November 20, 2020. Born on April 5, 1936 to Roland and Nita Askins in Tampa, Florida, Lib dedicated her life to her family and friends and was loved by all who knew her. She gave love unconditionally expecting nothing in return. She is survived by her adored husband of 64 years, Virgil Gurney. Their life together through the wonderful and trying times was a living example to their four children.
Libby worked for High Point College in the continuing education department for many years. In those years, she left a lasting impression on the many people she met and grew to love. She loved to travel, cook, gamble and be the trial boss to all.
In addition to Virgil, Mom is survived by her children and their spouses, Cherie Shepherd, Bill and Leslie Gurney, John Gurney and Karen and Tracy McDaniel. The hole she leaves in our heart will be filled only by our sweet memories of her love.
Nan, as she is affectionately known, is also survived by her seven grandchildren and their significant others, Jaron and Jamie Gurney, Shane and Erin Shepherd, Emilee and Brandon Pike, Georgia Rae and Tyler Martin, Adam McDaniel and Miranda Armfield, Winslow Gurney and Kenny Winslow, Maitland Gurney and Evan Rhodes. Nanny is also survived by her seven great-grandchildren, Maddox Penland, Grayson Shepherd, Madalyn Gurney, Sawyer Pike, Copeland Martin, Savannah Shepherd and her baby great granddaughter Lily McDaniel to be born in March 2021.
Lib is also survived by cousins and dear friends that she spent precious time creating life long memories.
Lib, Mom, Nan, Nanny will be missed more than words can describe, more than tears can cover or time will heal. She and our father are, were and will always be the rock of our family. Her legacy will live on in our hearts and lives.
A service will be scheduled at a later time. The family will be at her home this weekend to celebrate her and the wonderful, wonderful life she led. Goodbye Nanny, we love you.
