Mr. Michael Judson Stephenson, 79, of High Point, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at his home.

He was born October 2nd, 1940 in Greensboro, NC to the late Cyrus and Ida Mae Stephenson.

Known as Mike to family and friends, he met and married the love of his life, Barbara Kendall, on October 27, 1968 after meeting through her employer in High Point. A dedicated employee who took great pride in his work, Mike worked as a store engineer for Food World and Byrd’s Food Center for over 20 years and in purchasing at Furnitureland South from 2000 until his death.

In his spare time, Mike enjoyed music and was a talented guitar player. From 1960 to 1969, he played guitar with the beach music band Chester Mayfield and the Casuals. Following The Casuals, he joined Ray Wood and the Group, and in most recent years performed with Cut Glass. Mike had a strong interest in sports cars and you could often find him walking the lot at Foreign Cars Italia on the weekends. Mike had a unique, calm and carefree spirit; but also a wonderful sense of humor. Within a few minutes of being in his company, you were already laughing from his jokes. Mike hardly ever left the house without a disposable camera in his pocket, always ready to capture a memory. He especially treasured making memories on his annual summer beach vacation, with his wife, Barbara. Mike loved his family dearly, and deeply valued the time spent together.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents Cyrus and Ida Mae Stephenson and his sister, Sarah Brock. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara of High Point; his son, Kevin Stephenson and wife, Diana, of High Point; his brother Jimmy Stephenson and wife, Rayma, of Colfax; his brother in law Gary Brock of Archdale; his two grandchildren, Carter Stephenson and Sadie Stephenson of High Point; nephew Buck Stephenson and wife, Lori, of Kernersville; niece Ashley Stephenson and husband, Gustavo Conde, of Raleigh; his uncle Sydney Stephenson of Greensboro; as well as numerous great nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Guilford County Animal Shelter.

A funeral service honoring Mike will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2020 at Sechrest Funeral Service, located at 1301 East Lexington Ave in High Point, with the Reverend Katie Lovelace officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service and a graveside burial will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery at 1739 W English Rd in High Point.

Barbara and Kevin,
So very sorry for the loss of your Husband and Father. The obituary was beautifully written. My regret is that I did not know Mike - the memories shared by others were quite a tribute to Him.
May you find peace in the many memories that you shared.
Much love, Barbara Yoder Rawson

Too many good memories to list in this small space, but I remember a many a snowy morning when Mike and I came into work at FLS when many others did not attempt. Mike took pride in his efforts to have "great" attendance at work. His was as fine of a coworker as he was a person. Both were impeccable. One of the last few snows we've had, Mike wore a hoodie into work with a coat and ball cap. I had him pull the hoodie top over his head so I could take a photo. We laughed, and laughed at that picture. * Good times. Tony Moore

I was saddened and surprised to hear of Mike’s passing. I worked alongside Mike for many years at Food World. He was exactly as described - dignified, respectful, humorous, and caring.
I remember Mike flying with me in my small personal airplane on a few company business trips. He never second guessed, judged, or complained but kept a stiff upper lip and soldiered on despite me being a relatively young pilot. Occasionally he might observe something while flying that would raise a question but it was always a good question.
I feel fortunate to have been able visit with Mike a few times over the past several years, luckily he never changed.
Mike was loved by his Food World family and by the Hutchens family. We will miss him.

I was very sorry to learn of Mike's passing. We worked together at Furnitureland South for many years. I looked up to Mike. He was a kind, caring person who exuded a calm confidence and humility I respected. Mike was consistent in his affirmation and encouragement of others. A couple weeks ago I saw him when we both stopped to pick up pizzas. He blessed me even during that brief encounter. I learned much from Mike about sincerity, and I aspire to be more like him. I pray that God will comfort Mike's family and friends.

So sadden about Michael. I just talked with him at Target. We were going to make plans to go to the new Austin's for dinner so I could catch up with him and Barbara. I still have fond memories of us going with Barbara to watch him play base guitar. It was a privilege to work with him at Big Bear and Food World and to call him a friend.
