Mr. Ray Garland Crisp, age 81, passed away on May 1, 2026. Ray was born on December 8, 1944, in Swain County to the late Hardy and Derol Shepherd Crisp. He was a resident of High Point, North Carolina.
In 1965, Ray entered the United States Army and served until 1967. He was a combat veteran in Vietnam and is a true American hero. Six months prior to his discharge, he married the love of his life, Lois Fortner, in June of 1967. Their marriage of 58 years stood as a testament to steady devotion, faithful love, and the kind of loyalty that endures through every season.
After his military service, Ray worked as a conductor for CSX Transportation for over 30 years. During his years on the railroad, he also worked for Amtrak and The Smokey Mountain Railway. He approached his work with diligence and pride—hard-working, honest, and dependable—earning the respect of those who knew him through his steady presence and wise judgment.
Ray and Lois raised four children—Tevis, Will, Shannon, and Rachel—and Ray’s life was rooted in family. He was known by many names: Ray, Dad, Paw, Sudders, Daddy, Donut, DB (Dear Brother), and Sugar Bear. Whatever name was spoken, it was met with the same gentle strength, patient guidance, and thoughtful care. A devoted family man who loved the Lord, Ray put his family first and worked tirelessly to provide for them. He was supportive of all his children’s endeavors and interests, and his intuition and attentiveness often let him sense when something was wrong—offering comfort with compassion, steadiness, and quiet courage.
Ray found joy in the simple and meaningful things: trains, animals, nature, and fishing. He enjoyed watching cartoons such as Spongebob Squarepants, Disney, and Looney Tunes, and he especially liked watching Rachel play video games like Super Mario Brothers and Animal Crossing. An avid coffee drinker, Ray also had a fondness for sweets, which became a favorite pastime. He appreciated sports as well, particularly boxing and MMA fighting. Through these everyday pleasures, his humorous spirit and adventurous curiosity shone—bringing warmth and lightness to the lives around him.
Ray was never a stranger to anyone. His generosity was not performative, but instinctive—marked by a selfless willingness to help, to listen, and to give, even when it cost him. Even in difficult times, he continued to think of his family first, offering kindness with a gentle heart and a resilient spirit. His example was inspirational not because he sought recognition, but because he lived with sincerity, compassion, and steadfast love.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Hardy and Derol Shepherd Crisp, and his two brothers, Jack and Bill Crisp.
Survivors who will cherish Ray’s memory include his beloved wife of 58 years, Lois Crisp; his four children, Tevis (Bob) Danser, Will (Mary) Crisp, Shannon (Richard) Crisp, and Rachel Crisp; five grandchildren, Ryan (Marie) Danser, Jacob (Rachael) Danser, Ethan (Brittany) Danser, Landon (Haley) Danser, and Avery Crisp; four great-grandchildren, Soren Danser, Rory Danser, Adora Danser, and Sawyer Danser; three sisters, Juanita Fuller, Betty Lackey, and Ann Holden; and his two doggies, Yoshi and Peaches.
Ray was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was, in the words of those who loved him most, “the best Daddy ever,” and he will remain forever cherished and beloved.
