Sara Spradley Groce

Mrs. Groce was born in High Point on June 10, 1925 to Horace and Estelle Carter Spradley. She graduated from North State Business School and served as an Accountant for the City of High Point for thirty six years, retiring in 1990. Mrs. Groce was a member of the Board of Directors of the Windchase Subdivision where she previously lived. She also served as secretary of the High Point Municipal Credit Union and was on the Board of Directors. She was a former member and officer of the American Business Women’s Club. Mrs. Groce was an active member of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church and served as teacher of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. On Feb. 8, 1943 she married Billy M. Groce who she cherished and loved all her life. Billy preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Groce was a loving and devoted wife and mother who always had a smile on her face. She was an accomplished seamstress and made drapes for the furniture market and local individuals. Her husband brought her three dolls when he returned from overseas, and that started her interest and affection for a collection of dolls from all over the world.

Surviving are her daughter; Mrs. Betty Johnson of Garner, NC; two sons, Craig Groce of Morrisville, NC; and Keith Groce of Bremerton, WA. There are five grandchildren : Sara Megan Hanson, Heather Amanda Butts, Julia Paige Hokanson, David Reade Groce, and Lindsay Grace Johnson and six great grandchildren: Samantha Nichole Bridges, Christine Marie Knight, Oscar Eugene Hokanson, Fritz Mitchell Hokanson, Joseph Scott Butts, and Hannah June Butts.

Funeral services for Mrs. Groce will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Sechrest Funeral Service Chapel with the Reverend Melvin B. Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
