She married Archie Lee Barnes on September 1, 1957 who preceded her in death in June, 1989. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Billy Hoover, a sister, Nancy Fine, and her son Archie Barnes II.
Surviving are three daughters: Arlee Boylen (Mark) of Archdale, Sandy Cook (Martin) of High Point, and Sherri Gilbert (Preston) of High Point; seven grandchildren: Brett Boylen, Brittany Boylen Beaver, Chelsea Cook Andrews, Alexander Cook, Madison Barnes, Phoenix Barnes, and Peyton Gilbert; four great grandchildren: Eloise and Winston Andrews, and Emma and Hank Beaver. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Kathy Harmon, Dorothy Hoover, and Marilyn Barnes. As well as her daughter-in-law, Tracy Hicks Barnes and many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service for Shirley will be held for the immediate family. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
