Carol J. Burkard, age 79, of White Lake Township, passed away Friday, April 15 2022 at her home surrounded by her family. Left to cherish her memory are her five loving children: Linda (Greg) Cunningham, Cheryl (Marco) Tiapago, Rich (Denise) Burkard, Lisa (John) Gusman, and Drs. Heidi (Charlie) Henry; her six grandchildren: Justin, Andrew (Grace), Jessica (Jason), Kayla, Charles and Elena; her two great grandchildren Gabby and Elliott; and many loving nieces and nephews. Carol also has a third great grandchild due in July. Carol was born on July 13, 1942 in Detroit, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mervin and Frances (Selden) Berkseth.
Throughout her adult life, Carol was incredibly passionate about the work she did within the Township of White Lake. She began her career at the White Lake Township library, where she became inspired to get more involved in her community. She was on the board of the local outreach center, local subdivision board and business association board. Carol was elected to the White Lake Township Board of Trustees. She won elections for five consecutive terms: 12 years as a trustee and 8 years as the White Lake Township Clerk. She received numerous awards, including honors from the Michigan Senate and Governor Snyder, the House of Representatives, Oakland County Commissioners and the Township of White Lake. One of her favorite awards was the “Unsung Hero Award” from Governor Engler in 1995. Committed to helping others in her community, she wore the title of “The People’s Partner“ as a badge of honor.
Carol was a wonderful mother and always felt her greatest accomplishment was her five children. She also was so proud of all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to spend her time decorating her home with the help of her wonderful home health care aides, Francine, Cornelia and Jackie, along with many others over the years. The family is truly grateful for their loving care.
Carol was an exceptional woman with a high level of mental toughness and grit. As many know, she was involved in a severe auto accident in 2003, yet continued to serve her community from her hospital bed. She would even arrive at work via an ambulance. The “People’s Partner“ will be greatly missed.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Mervin and Frances; her three brothers: Donald, Bob, and Bill; and her two sisters: Nancy and Marlene. Carol’s family will receive friends at the Highland Chapel of the Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, 3295 E. Highland Rd., Highland, MI 48356, on Friday, April 22, 2022, from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm, with a brief memorial service taking place at 6:00 pm.
