Born in Pontiac on February 27, 1965, Denise was the beloved daughter of Everett and Mary McBee.
Denise is survived by her devoted partner, Bryan Herrington; her children, Savannah(Casey) Thornton, Kevin (Jenny) McBee, and Sara Frye; her cherished grandchildren, Samara, Marla, William, Kevin Jr., Victoria, and Emma; her great-grandson, Jameson; her sister, Donna McBee, and her former husband and dear friend, Tony Frye. She also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Mary McBee; her husband, Lawrence Pena; and her brothers, Donnie McBee, David McBee, and Richard McBee.
Denise was a true people person whose outgoing personality made her a friend to everyone she met. A social butterfly by nature, she loved speaking with those she cared for. Whether running errands or taking a long drive, she would rather spend the time talking with those around her than listening to the radio. She was someone who loved deeply with her whole being and gave selflessly to those fortunate enough to know her.
She found great joy in crocheting, creating blankets and covers for her family and friends. Denise also loved cooking and was especially known for her delicious meatballs, chicken and dumplings, and comforting Southern-style meals that brought family together around the table. Above all else, she cherished her loved ones and would do anything for them.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to an organization of the donor’s choice in Denise’s memory.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, July 24th, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 5:00 p.m. at Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, Highland Chapel, 3295 E. Highland Road, Highland, Michigan 48356.
