Jane Johnston Steele, age 77, of Milford, passed away early in the morning on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at Ascension Providence Hospital in Novi, while both of her daughters held her hands. Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Craig Zollars, Elizabeth “Beth” (Dwight) Roberts; Mike Steele; and Lauren (Tommy) Taormina; her six grandchildren: Eva and Logan Zollars, Elise Roberts, and Enzo, Gemma, and Élio Taormina; her two siblings: Tom Hangstefer III and Martie Cheadle; and her late brother John’s wife, Kathy Hangstefer.
Jane was born August 13, 1943, in Washington D.C., the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Thomas and Anne (Hegeman) Hangstefer II. She met David Steele while working together at the Stouffer’s Northland Inn, and they started dating, fell in love, and were married on June 3, 1972. Jane and David spent twenty-six wonderful years together until David’s untimely death on April 7, 1999, at age 50. Jane never fully recovered from losing him.
Throughout her adult life, Jane kept busy as a stay at home mom, and loved hosting gatherings. Although she was unable to regularly attend church, she was very strong in her faith in God.
In her free time, Jane could often be found reading a good book, working in her beautiful flower garden, or enjoying a margarita with her family and friends. She loved traveling and trips to the family cottage on Lake Huron. She was a wonderful woman who will be missed by many.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer Thomas and Anne; her loving husband, David Steele; and her three brothers: John Hangstefer, James B. Hangstefer, and James “JD” Hangstefer.
In accordance with Jane’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Dates and times for a Hawaiian themed memorial service celebrating Jane’s life will be held on Monday, August 23, 2021, at 11:00 am at the Cornerstone Church of Highland, 4995 N. Hickory Ridge Road, Highland 48357. Jane's family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am, followed by a luncheon. A graveside service will follow at Highland Cemetery, 561 N. Milford Road, Highland 48357.
