

Born on May 16, 1929, in Highland Park, Michigan, John was the beloved son of Henry and Ethelyn Bechtel. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Military Police officer.
He earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Wayne State University. He dedicated 42 years to Detroit Public Schools as a teacher, counselor, and the treasurer for the Detroit federation of teachers, positively impacting the lives of countless students and colleagues throughout his distinguished career.
John was married to his beloved wife, Patricia, for 60 years until her passing. Together they built a loving family and shared a lifetime of cherished memories.
He is survived by his children, John (Debbie) Bechtel, Karl Bechtel, Janet (Mike) Kramb, and Rodney (Tabatha) Bechtel. He was a proud grandfather to Rodney (Elizabeth), Nicholas (Leeha), Stacy, Ann (Kyle), Lauren, and Brenden (Aisha). He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Mike, Marlo, Ryann, and Sean.
Through his remarkable journey of 97 years, John touched many lives with his wisdom, humor, kindness, and unwavering passion for life. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026 with visitation starting at 9:00am and a service at 11:00 at Elton Black & Son Funeral Home in Highland, Michigan. A luncheon will follow at Faith Lutheran Church, 3501 E. Highland Road, Highland, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
John’s legacy of service, education, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
