Born September 18, 1954, in Detroit, Mary spent her life between the city, its suburbs, and Fowlerville. She graduated from St. Mary’s of Redford and would have described herself as a homemaker, caretaker, and artist—roles that came as naturally to her as breathing.
Mary devoted much of her life to caring for others, offering her time and heart wherever they were needed. She was especially dedicated to her parents later in their lives, ensuring they were surrounded by comfort and dignity. She was steadfast in protecting their peace, tending to them with quiet devotion and love.
Strong-willed and independent, her strength was always guided by kindness. She believed that understanding people was the best way to bring peace, and she lived by that quiet philosophy every day.
She had a discerning view of the world but always led with empathy. Mary could sense loneliness in others—the stranger at the grocery store, the neighbor passing by—and would stop to offer conversation and warmth. She had a rare gift for seeing the good in people and for meeting the world with gentle wisdom.
Mary rarely sat down to eat; she preferred to make sure everyone else was cared for first. When she wasn’t tending to others, she was steadily working with her hands—painting, fixing, rearranging, or creating something beautiful. She had an artist’s patience, finding quiet joy in making her surroundings a reflection of care and grace.
Mary is survived by her children, Michael Porretta (and his wife, Courtney) and Meghan (and her husband, Luke); and by her siblings Margaret (Peggy), Anne, James, Julie, and Elizabeth, along with many loving family members.
Her life was defined by care, creativity, and quiet strength—and by the grace of choosing gentleness in a world that too often forgets its value.
A memorial service celebrating Mary’s life will be planned for a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to organizations that reflect Mary’s lifelong compassion and spirit of service:
American Diabetes Association — supporting research, education, and advocacy
