Robert Joseph Portman, 90 years of age, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at home with his son by his side. Bob was born April 23, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Genevieve Portman (Schrein) and the late Orlo Portman. He was the eldest of six children. He was preceded in death by his brother, William, and is survived by his siblings, Sharon, Paul, Thomas, and Edward. Bob married the late Jean Ann Gallagher on November 25, 1954. They shared nearly 64 years of loving marriage and raised 6 children together: Lynn Jim, Denise, Nadine (deceased), Lisa, and Michelle. They had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. They loved their family deeply and felt very blessed by all they had been given.
Bobby enjoyed life and loved people. He had a gift for connecting with people, making them smile, and bringing laughter wherever he went. When mom grew older and earned a few wrinkles, he would say, "I love my little Shar Pei!" Jeanie would then say, "And I love my little dalmatian!" referring to his age spots. Another time, they were traveling and Mom had to visit the restroom on the plane. She was in there for a while when the stewardess asked Dad if he thought she was alright. His response was, " I'm pretty sure she isn't pregnant!" This received laughs from the stewardess and nearby passengers.
Bobby loved Frank Sinatra's song "I Did It My Way." He wanted people to celebrate at his Funeral - One big party, a beer or two, special stories, good times! NO TEARS! That was his request. We have one life, live it with love and no regrets! Thank you all for coming to celebrate Bob's life!
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM at Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, 3295 E Highland Rd, Highland, Michigan 48356. The family will receive guests on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
