Russ was an army veteran who is preceded in death by his father and his wife, Marianne Ravary. Survived by his mother, siblings, daughter and granddaughter, his son, Ryan Akers (Katie), grandchildren Oliver, Cassidy, and Madelyn, his girlfriend , Sharyn Schymick, and many in her family who loved him as their own.
Russ lived life to the fullest and had such a generous heart. He was a world traveller and a man of many hats, he did so much for those he loved and his community. Perhaps he sold you a house, landscaped your lawn, or helped you winterize your boat. He might have thrown a party for someone you loved or invited you to one of his many parties. You might have eaten some of the vegetables he grew in his garden or helped him support one of his charitable causes. Perhaps he made you a meaningful gift using one of his many talents. He probably let you play on the lake toys that his grandchildren lovingly nicknamed "Opa's Summer Camp."
His absence is already felt so deeply by those who loved him most, it's difficult to sum up a life as large as his into a few short paragraphs.
In honor of Russ's life, a visitation will be held at Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, 3295 East Highland Road, Highland, MI 48356, on September 21, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Funeral Service will follow at the same location on September 22, 2026, at 11:00 am with an in-state hour preceding at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Russ's memory to Toys for Tots.
