

Ruth Marie Sullivan, beloved wife, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026, at the age of 81. She leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, hard work, creativity, and a life beautifully lived.
Ruth was born on May 18, 1945, in the family home in Lake Linden, Michigan, to Olga Nara Palo and John Walfred Palo. She grew up on the family dairy farm, where she developed the strong work ethic and no-nonsense spirit that would remain a defining part of who she was throughout her life.
Ruth earned her nursing certificate from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and began a long and dedicated nursing career. She started working in a mental health ward before moving into obstetrics, where delivering babies became one of the great highlights of her career. She ultimately became a surgical nurse in the outpatient surgery division at Henry Ford Hospital, where she devoted 25 years of service.
Ruth was married to the love of her life, Dudley “Sully” Sullivan, for 48 years. Together they built a life filled with family, friendships, laughter, and a deep love of the water. Ruth lived near or on the water for much of her life. Their home in Highland on White Lake became a special place where Ruth and Sully formed lifelong friendships with the wonderful, close-knit, multigenerational neighborhood that became like family to them.
In retirement, Ruth’s creative spirit truly flourished. Her love of stained glass grew into an passion for painting. She studied under professional artist Heiner Hurdling and developed a remarkable talent for capturing landscapes, animals, and the beloved pets of those around her. Ruth often gave her artwork to family and friends, as sharing her special creations brought her tremendous joy. Her paintings remain treasured reminders of her generous heart and artistic spirit.
Ruth was loyal, hardworking, independent, and straightforward. She had a wonderful ability to make lasting friendships and was someone people could count on. She valued the people in her life deeply and created memories that will be cherished by many.
Ruth is survived by her sister, Karen Cirino; her niece, Kirste Gaudet and her husband, David Gaudet, and her grandniece, Morgan Gaudet, and grandnephews, William Gaudet and Grant Gaudet.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dudley Sullivan, her parents, Olga Nara Palo and John Walfred Palo, and her brother, Charles Palo.
Ruth will be remembered for her strength, loyalty, generosity, creativity, and the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable life. She will be deeply missed by her family, her longtime friends, and the White Lake community that became such an important part of her life.
A Memorial Visitation will be held at Elton Black and Son Funeral Home Highland Chapel, located at 3295 E. Highland Road, Highland, MI 48356 on October 20, 2026 from 5:30-7:30 pm.
