Theodore (Ted) Crossman

Theodore (Ted) Crossman, 92, died Monday, April 9, 2018. A resident of Brighton, Michigan, Ted went to be with the Lord after a valiant eight-year-battle with cancer.

He is survived by wife, Bethly, sons Stephen (Dana) Crossman, Mark (Beatriz) Crossman, Peter (Chrissy) Crossman, and daughter, Heidi (Mark Johnson) Crossman-Johnson. Ted was blessed with eight grandchildren. In addition to raising his own children, over 20 foster children and numerous foreign exchange students were welcomed into his home.

Born and raised in northeastern Pennsylvania, Ted’s love for plants and his life-long desire to learn took him to Houghton College in New York where he earned a Bachelor’s and Eastern Michigan University where he received his Master’s in Education. Ted married his beloved wife, Bethly, and relocated to Brighton, Michigan, to begin a rewarding thirty-year teaching career in the Brighton School District.

Ted enjoyed educating fourth grade students at Hawkins Elementary School. His attention to detail, kindness, and patience were appreciated by all. Ted retired from teaching in the early 1990’s and devoted countless hours to his grandchildren and gardening. Ted possessed an amazing ability to remember names and faces. Former students in the community would often recognize and speak with him, and he would delight them by recalling their names and interests, even in recent years.

Ted was a long-time member and board member at Brighton Wesleyan Church; later, he joined Cornerstone Evangelical Presbyterian Church. He was active in the Michigan Educators’ Christian Fellowship group, represented Livingston County at the Area Agency on Aging 1-B, and served on the board of directors for the Livingston Association of Retired School Personnel for years.

Visitation, 9:30am - 11:00am, at Cornerstone Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 9455 Hilton Road, Brighton, on Friday, April 20. A Celebration of Life begins at 11:00am with lunch immediately following. In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks donations be made to either Grace Centers of Hope ( or Clara’s Hope (

Cousin Ted was a delight to share our search history of Joseph Strang - and two children in Mason Michigan "Maple Grove Cemetery" in 1988. The travels to the Henry Ford Museum was also a delight with the end of the weekend in church service and a flight back to NY. We exchanged many family history stories that were such a great comfort to my Mom. Explaining the gap of history in the division of the family and reunion of history was always an adventure. A few of the third generation of Joseph's family still remain in Kalamazoo MI. God's Peace to the family and notice was just received via phone from Bethly Oct 20, 2018. God Rest with all of your adventures ahead in the days remaining as we await The Lord's Great Getting-Up Morning to come. Blessings = Tom & Bonnie Hall of Binghamton NY.

I’m quite shocked and Very saddened to learn of Mr. Crossmans passing. Mr. & Mrs. Crossman came into the funeral home I’m employed at many times to pay respects to friends that have passed. And I *ALWAYS* enjoyed chatting with them. I still couldn’t believe he was 92 and I told him so. I wish I had known about this when he passed so I could of paid my respects.
Mrs Crossman & Heidi and family, please accept my heartfelt condolences he was such a good man, he set the bar for what a true Gentleman & Christian man should be..... Rest In Peace Mr. Crossman you had a life well lived, you will be missed by many but never forgotten... the world was a better place because of you

I was very sorry to learn that Ted had passed away. He was a delightful across-the-hall neighbor when I came to teach at Hawkins---no one could have been kinder or more thoughtful. I especially enjoyed his quiet sense of humor, so we had many laughs about the ups and downs of teaching grade school. Ted was devoted to his family and his church as well, and I enjoyed the chance to know Bethly, Heidi, and several of his church friends. I have missed Ted at recent Hawkins Christmas breakfasts, which for years had been a great way to keep up with his busy retirement, but I will always think of him and how lucky I was to have such a thoroughly good person as part of my life. My heart goes out to all his family at this time of loss, Heather Allen

Mr. Crossman was one of the kindest teachers and human beings I ever had the honor of knowing. He was my fourth grade teacher at Hawkins and I have nothing but fond memories of him! I'm so sorry for your loss, but happy that you were blessed with his kind soul for so long.

I am so sorry for your loss. What a special man your father, grandfather and husband was. I remember so many years ago when he came into our classroom and helped the children plant a seedling from the many starts that he brought in. I still have a big patch of hens and chicks that I took home from him. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you-

Ted's daughter said it best when she said the best way to honor her father was to treat people as he always did....if enough of us do that, the world will be a better place.

My Dad also left us at 92....and even though he may have been ready for eternal rest, it was very difficult for us to let him go. One day at a time and hold the wonderful memories close.

Thoughts and prayers for the entire family....they are all so very special.

Ted and Bethly invited us to dinner one night. We really didn't know each other and after our time with them we started dating. Three years later we were married. Our evening with them showed us what a great couple they were and how kind and caring they were with each other. You have touched so many lives and we thank God for you. All our love.
