Alyce Merry (nee Edison) Kobs passed away in her sleep on October 6, 2018 in Holland, Michigan at 90 years of age. She was born September 26, 1928 to Albert St. Clair Edison and Ethel (nee Gross) Edison in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After graduating from Grand Rapids Central High School in 1945, she attended Michigan State University, where she met and married John H. Kobs, Jr. after her graduation in 1949.
For many years, they lived in Haslett, Michigan until they moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1966, where John was an officer with The State Bank and later worked for Fort Dodge Community School District as business manager. Alyce put her college degree to work by teaching Spanish for many years at St. Edmond High School, where she made many lifelong friends among the students, staff and clergy. She was also active in PEO and Ingleside Club in Fort Dodge and loved to play golf.
In 1985, after John retired from the school district, they left Fort dodge to spend their winters in the Dominican Republic, where they had a vacation home, and their summers in Holland, Michigan. Later, after John had died, she lived full time in Holland, where she continued to be active in PEO.
Alyce is survived by her sons, Dr. John H. Kobs III and his wife Shae of Holland, Michigan and Andrew S. Kobs and his wife Lynette of Bright, Indiana, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and longtime companion Julius Petz of Holland, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband John H. Kobs Jr., her parents, and siblings Evelyn Nyblade, Jack Edison and Bette Klein.
The family would like to thank Lakeside Vista Nursing Home, old friends and relations and especially Julius Petz for their care and attention in the last few months of Alyce’s declining health. There will be a private family service at a later date. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
