        John and I began playing and singing together at parties in early 1963. That led to some paid gigs later that year with various musicians. In early 1964 we started playing at various bars and clubs around Holland, and in June '64 we had a three week engagement at the Coral Gables.
        Soon after that gig John went to California. Soon after that he called me and asked me to join him. I did so and soon we were off to Hawaii. Wai Ki Ki beaches were where we spent most of our time. John always had his guitar and people loved to hear him play and sing. We did lots of early Beatle stuff together. It was great fun. That fall we returned to Michigan and with Ron Gibson, Dale Knoll, and Rodney Mullett the Sheffields were born.
         In a conversation on the phone with John last week, he brought up some humorous memories of the years with the Shelfies and we shared some good laughs. For me, the recording sessions of John's great songs stand out in my bank of memories. John was a great talent. His guitar playing, his singing, and his song writing abilities - each was one of a kind. He sang Del Shannon and Paul McCartney. Not many could do that. On top of that, he was a great guy with a sense of humor to match. Then came the Vietnam War and in time, we each went in other directions.
        In the week preceding his passing John and I talked three times. Each time was a good conversation with laughter and plans to get together.
        The news of his death was a blow to me. His music lives in me and I'll miss him dearly.
        To John's devoted sisters I offer my deepest sympathy. To all those others who will also miss him, I offer the same.

I feel terrible I can't be present to celebrate John's life and share such great memories of our Sheffield times together during the 60's. The Sheffields would have never formed without John, what a fantastic voice and guitar player. John was, without a doubt, one of the most talented guys I've ever known!! My sincere sympathy and condolences to the Dunn family.

Lots of great memories of John from back in the day. He was my best friend growing up. My condolences to all of the Dunn family.
