Mary was born in Tilden, Nebraska on October 4, 1953 to Lloyd and Mildred (Swanson) Smith. She was the oldest of six children. Mary grew up in Nebraska and she was a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Long time friends described her as practical, pragmatic and caring.
She married Gene McClain on August 15, 1981, and the couple eventually settled in Holland. Mary was a passionate and involved Wife, Mom and Grandma. She was a gifted photographer all her life. Mary became an avid cyclist later in life, and hit the road at any opportunity. She and Gene co-owned and operated ITB Packaging for over 7 years prior to retirement. She was a kind, loving, loyal, free spirted, humanitarian. Mary will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Gordon Smith and Roger Smith.
Mary is survived by her husband Gene; three daughters and her grandchildren, Keshia Roberts (Nella, Ford, and Zoe), Courtney and Zach DeWitt (Jackson and Maverick) and Chelsey McClain (grand dog Bentley); her loving cats Lexi and Willow; siblings Jim Smith, Ann and Dean Sladek, and Charlie and Peggy Smith; in-laws John and Margaret McClain, and Paul McClain; many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
A gathering to celebrate Mary’s life will be Monday, December 18, 2023 from 1-3pm at Lakeshore Memorial Services, 11939 James St., Holland.
