Sharon Kay Larkin

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend passed away with her husband by her side on November 21, 2023. She was 80 years old, born on May 27, 1943 in Saginaw, MI to Carl and Dorothy Herzberg. At age 16 years she met the love of her life, Oliver Larkin. They were separated while Oliver was in the army, after which they married on November 30, 1963. Sharon was a graduate of Arthur Hill High School and of Delta College where she graduated with an Associates Degree in nursing and became a licensed registered nurse. Sharon worked in the Emergency Room at St Luke's Hospital (now Covenant Health), then also worked in diabetes education. She also worked at Helen Devos Children's Hospital in pediatric endocrinology before retiring.

Sharon especially enjoyed volunteering yearly at Camp Midicha, a camp for children with diabetes. She also volunteered at local missions in Holland and Zeeland and participated in "prayer and pamper," providing foot care for patients with diabetes. She volunteered her time giving presentations on various topics related to diabetes, and taught classes at the Ottawa County Health Department. Sharon received the "Diabetes Educator of the Year" award in 2003 for her special ability to connect with patients and tireless efforts in the community.

Sharon was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Holland and was very involved in church activities including Bible study, working in the nursery, VBS, altar duty, and mission trips. Sharon also enjoyed gardening, maintaining flowers and plants both at their home in Holland and at their cottage in Northern Michigan. She will forever be remembered for her sense of humor, her love and devotion to family and friends, and her deep love and affinity for children.

Surviving are her husband Oliver Larkin, 3 children Shawn Hillman (Russ), David Larkin (Heidi), and Sarah Schallhorn, 6 grandchildren Emily, Megan, Talen, Mekaela, Jada, and Liam, 3 great grandchildren Ryker, Hope, and Emery, and 2 step- grandchildren Stephen and Courtney. Also surviving are beloved siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and countless friends.

A memorial service will take place at 11:00am on Monday, December 11, 2023 at Zion Lutheran Church, 77 32nd Street, Holland, MI 49423. Family and friends are welcome to visit with the family prior to the service from 9:30am - 11:00am. Pastor Ryan Winningham will officiate, assisted by Pastor Jerry Larkin. A luncheon will follow at the church. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials and/or donations to Zion Lutheran Church or to a charity of their choice.
