OBITUARY

Shirley A. Guevara

March 7, 1950September 4, 2016

Shirley Ann Guevara, age 66, was united with her heavenly father on Sunday, September 4, 2016, surrounded by her family in her Holland, Michigan home. Her life was sadly claimed prematurely to cancer.

She was born in Zeeland, Michigan on March 7, 1950, where she was raised by her very loving Christian parents Forris and Gertrude Brummel (preceded in death). Her siblings still live in the area. Shirley's older brother Laverne Brummel and his wife Marcia, younger sister Eileen Blauwkamp and younger brother Kevin Brummel and his wife Joyce.

She graduated from Holland Christian High School then took a job at Colonial Clocks in Zeeland, where she fell in love with her soulmate Noe Guevara of Grand Rapids in 1970. The two were married on November 6 later that year. Together they raised four children. Their daughter Kelly Groteler and her husband Robert (Holland MI), their son Jamie Guevara and wife Christine (Santa Fe, NM), and sons Thomas and David Guevara (Holland MI).

During their 45 year marriage they were also blessed with 5 grandchildren - Caleb, Haley, Sydney, Brooke and Saige. They will always remember grandma Shirley for the time spent feeding the deer, playing with dolls, and quality time spent at the cabin. She was a devoted stay home mother and raised her children to love Jesus. In 1990, Noe was severely injured in a motorcycle accident leaving him a quadriplegic. With the Lords help, she dedicated her life to his full time care. She accompanied him to his job at the phone company for many years allowing him to retire. She enjoyed reading, antiquing, nature, and spending time at their cabin (sanctuary) in Wellston, Michigan, surrounded by wildlife. Shirley will always be an example of undeniable faith, unconditional love, and servitude to her family and Heavenly Father.

A service to celebrate her life will be Saturday, September 10, 11 a.m., at Lakeshore Memorial Services, 11939 James Street, Holland Michigan. Visitation will be Thursday, September 8, 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Holland.

I worked with Shirley and Noe at Colonial Clocks years ago. Both were great friends back then. The family has my deepest sympathy and are in my thoughts and prayers.

My favorite thought of you is when I became an over the rode truck driver. You provided me with some very useful equipment. Such as my tire thumper and lucky pocket knife. But what I cherished the most was my Bible and the magnetic base flashlight. God words gave me the courage to face whatever I had to face. That little flashlight you gave me, it was the light in some pretty dark places.
No matter where I go, I bring my flashlight with me.
Thank you Shirley.
With love from Annette, Aaron(your favorite brother in law), Carmen, Adam, Victoria, Pete, Evelin and Leonardo.

I met Shirley Guevara on New Year's Day, 2001. She welcomed me into her home and her heart right away. A New Year, significant new beginnings.

As she warmly took my hands in her own, I think she could sense--even more clearly than I sensed at the time--that we were going to become family.

Sisters by marriage to Simon; and forever sisters, as daughters of the same Father.

Shirley was incredible. Many of us can complain of working jobs that consume us 24/7. As wife-nurse to Noe, Shirley's job truly was around the clock, around the year, across the decades. But she left out the complaining part. She cared for Noe quietly and seamlessly--in a blink she moved him, or checked his sugar, or zipped up his jacket. All the while--chatting, and sharing, asking me and my kids questions; and always, always smiling.

I can hear her sweet, smiley voice; complete with smiley eyes now on our wedding day, "You are beautiful. Just beautiful. Such a blessed bride. Welcome to the family!"

And then a decade and five kids later, same smile, same delight: "Your children are beautiful. Just beautiful. You and Simon are blessed. So blessed."

We will all miss the way Shirley's words and smile and humble serving heart blessed us. May we continue her legacy by living and giving as she did.

Prayers and love from Texas.

Noe and family,
I am so sad to hear of Shirley's passing. She was such a loving, caring person, and I always enjoyed our times sharing meals and talking about what was important to us in our lives.

Shirley and Noe were our neighbors in Holland. We have such good memories of going over and just hanging out with them in their kitchen. They loved my mom's Mexican food. They were such great neighbors. Their kids were like our mom's grandkids we loved having them over. I loved reading her obituary and knowing that her faith brought her to the end of her journey in a great way. We have some great memories of Shirley she was a great lady.

Shirley was always there when I needed her. Her strength helped me through so many times in my life. Shirley had a special insight and with just a few words she had a way of transmitting her selflessness to uphold me when it was so needed. I will truly miss her. Noe, our prayers and friendship are there for you always. Love you both.
