Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Friend
Arthur (“Art”) W. Fernandez, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away on October 7th, 2025, surrounded by family. He will be remembered for his kind heart, generosity, and unwavering optimism. To all who knew him, Art embodied the true meaning of love, friendship, and service.
Born and raised in Miami, Art graduated from Jackson High School, where he participated in various sports and was deeply involved in school life. A natural leader and lifelong sports enthusiast, he remained an active member of the Jackson High Alumni Committee, proudly supporting the school and community that helped shape him. After completing additional college courses and certifications, Art pursued a distinguished career as a Master Electrician, earning respect and admiration for his skill, leadership, and integrity.
As an IBEW L.U. 349 member in good standing since 1963, Art’s deep expertise and principled nature led him to serve on various committees and ultimately was elected Business Manager, a role he held with dedication for 25 years. Known for his fairness, strategic thinking, and exceptional ability to delegate, Art inspired those around him to take pride in their work and to always strive for excellence. He used every means at his disposal to fight for justice for his peers, his community, and those whose voices might otherwise have gone unheard.
Throughout his career, Art gave freely of his time and talent, coordinating and donating labor for numerous community projects, including the Linda Ray Center for Infants and Children, the University of Miami's baseball field house and the Marion Center for Children at St. Thomas University. His passion for helping others extended beyond his profession, as he served on the board of Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was instrumental in the decision to acquire the hospital’s first MRI machines, a milestone that advanced patient care for years to come. He also served on the Dade County Construction Trades Qualifying Board (CTQB), helping ensure high standards for contractors across the region.
A man of deep civic pride and patriotism, Art’s work and service took him as far as the White House, where he was recognized under Presidents Carter and Clinton. He also worked closely with Senator Elizabeth Doyle and the American Red Cross, helping establish the Union Hall as a center of operations for community aid efforts following Hurricane Andrew.
Art was an avid golfer and a proud member of the Sharpshooter Club, which raised funds for disabled children, one of the many causes close to his heart. He was also a loyal fan of the Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins, and University of Miami Hurricanes, always cheering passionately for his hometown teams. A proud Mason, Shriner, Scottish Rite member, and Jester, Art valued fellowship, honor, and the spirit of giving these organizations represent.
Art is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie Lee Fernandez; his daughter, Deanne Marie Jones (Eric Jones); his son, Michael Arthur Fernandez (Amy Lynn Fernandez); and his grandchildren, Kurtis Fernandez, Tyler Jones, and Jessica Jones. He also leaves behind his cherished niece and nephew, Amanda Fernandez and John Fernandez, along with a large extended family and many dear friends who will forever remember his generous spirit and contagious enthusiasm for life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son Arthur Fernandez Jr. and granddaughter Alyssa Lynn Fernandez, who now welcome him home.
Art lived a life defined by love, laughter, integrity, and service. He was a man of strong principles, guided by compassion and an unshakeable belief in doing what was right. His legacy of kindness, courage, and dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
