Barbara Katherine Holmes

Barbara K. Holmes 89, went to be with The Lord on Saturday February 01, 2014, Barbara had been battling an illness for about 7 months. Barbara was born in Brooklyn, NY to George and Anna Hirtreiter. Barbara eventually moved to Fort Lauderdale Fl. eventually purchasing a home in Wilton Manors, Fl., where she raised her daughter Gladys Ann. Ms. Holmes worked for the Broward County Property Appraisers office for 30 years. Barbara along with her former husband Carter also founded the first local newspaper for the communities of Wilton Manors and Oakland Park. After her retirement Barbara moved to Piedmont, Al. She was passionate about animals and wildlife. Barbara also had a big heart for helping those less fortunate.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Gladys Ann Birmingham (Jim), her two granddaughters Kimberleigh Wright (Tammy) and Chrisaleigh Wright-Steele (Tommy), and her three great grandchildren Jesse Harris, Brandon Harris and Ashleigh Steele. She also leaves behind her beloved pets Daisy (cat) and Bambi (dog). Barbara is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son-in-law Donald Wright along with life long friends Lester & Cleta White, and Kitty Staros, each with whom she considered family.
