Born in Havana, Cuba on December 7, 1958 to his beloved parents Rafael and Adys Herrera, Carlos spent his first seven years living in the capital city, gaining a deep love and passion for the sport of baseball and his island's rich culture. Moving to the states as a young boy in 1966 in hopes of a better life, Carlos and his family settled in Key West, where they built their home in his formative years. A gifted athlete as a teenager, Carlos received a baseball scholarship and spent time in college doing what he loved most. He earned a degree in Accounting and used his sharp leadership skills to become a brilliant businessman and healthcare entrepreneur, giving a voice to the uninsured. He was a dreamer and a doer, and he made a difference in so many lives, always trying to help others. His kind heart, fierce mind, and brave spirit allowed him to live a full life, both personally and professionally.
Carlos loved living in South Florida and being close to the water. An avid boater and a resourceful Renaissance man, he loved to deep-sea fish, play golf, dance, travel, listen to live music, and watch sports.
Carlos was a generous and loving son, brother, father, uncle, grandpa, and friend to all. He will be remembered for his strength, confidence, and giving nature.
Carlos is survived by his mother Adys Herrera, sister Sonia Menendez-Duran, brother-in-law Joe Duran, two daughters Melissa (Steven) Poth and Michele (Matt) Harmon, granddaughter Paisley Poth, nephew Marcos Menendez, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Rafael Marcos Herrera, in 2010, and brother-in-law, Conrado Menendez, in 2004.
His memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, December 9, 2017 (the weekend after what would have been his 59th birthday) at Fred Hunter Funeral Home, 2401 S. University Drive, Davie, Florida, 33324.
