With his loving family by his side, Douglas Lee Archer passed away peacefully on March 24th 2016 at the age of 61, ending a courageous four-year battle with cancer.
Douglas was born in Louisville, KY, but moved to Miami with his family at the age of 2, growing up in Opa Locka, FL. He attended Carol City High School where he played basketball, winning a State Championship and a scholarship to Biscayne College. Douglas had a long career in the transportation industry as Operations Manager for Nelson Motor Freightways, Inc. In 1985, Douglas and Barbara were married at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Davie, Florida, and continued living and raising their family in the same community.
Doug was an amazing husband, father, brother, friend and sportsman. His dedication and devotion to his family was steadfast. His passion of sports is reflected by the many years he coached youth baseball. When he wasn't coaching baseball, you could find him at a baseball game or a sporting event. His favorite time was spent with his family, being involved in every aspect of his children's lives. The last four months of his life were the most difficult to endure, and yet they brought some of greatest moments too. His daughter Christina gave him his first grandchild to hold and love on December 6th, 2015 (Gaston Christian Calderon), and in January he was able to witnesses his son, Andrew, being sworn into the U.S. Army.
Douglas is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Molly Archer and brother Timothy Archer.
Douglas is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barbara J Archer, his daughter Christina Alyssa, future son-in-law Nelson Gaston Calderon and grandson Gaston Calderon, his son Andrew J Archer, and future daughter-in-law Stephanie Clavet. Andrew is currently serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA.
Douglas is also survived by his brother Stephen Archer and family in Little Rock, AR, his sister Laura Hill and family in Hobe Sound, FL and by many nieces and nephews; David Hodge Jr, Jillian Archer Stewart, Timothy B. Archer, Michael Nelson, Billy Nelson, Gregg Nelson, Brandon Hill, Nick Hill, Stormi Clement and Bryan Clement.
His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
