Dulcie May Yates was affectionally known as “Auntie” by her nieces and nephews, and “Bibsie” by her playmates. She was born in the District of Meuse, Guy’s Hill, St Catherine, Jamaica (JA) on May 26, 1936. She was the third of three children born to Doris and Arthur Xerxes Yates.
Dulcie completed her early education at Guy’s Hill Elementary School then successfully completed the 3rd Jamaica Local Examination. At an early age she decided to dedicate her life to the profession of teaching. To this endeavor she completed a Diploma in Teaching (1966) at the esteemed Mico Teachers’ College, Kingston, JA. In 1973 she attained a Bachelor of Science in Education from Mills College of Education, New York City (NYC), NY. Unsatisfied with her accomplishments, she pursued and was in 1975 awarded a Master of Arts in Education from the prestigious New York University, NY.
Dulcie was a dedicated and lifelong Educator who taught at all four levels of the education system. She spent a decade as a Primary School Teacher from 1960-1970, St Mary, JA. She was an Early Childhood Education Teacher from the year of 1972 through 1975, NYC, NY. In 1975 she returned to Jamaica and was the Vice Principal of Guy’s Hill High School. Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College, St. James, was her next adventure, where she performed as Senior Lecturer and Head of Department, Technology in Education. In 1988 she applied to and was accepted for the position of Senior Lecturer and Head of Department, Technology in Education at her beloved alma mater, Mico Teachers’ College. She spent eleven years at Mico, retiring in the year 1999.
Upon retirement from Mico Teachers’ College, and ultimately the Ministry of Education, Dulcie recommitted herself to community service, outreach and the church. Not content to be just a congregant or casual observer she enrolled and successfully completed the qualifying examination for the position of local preacher. In this scope she performed as registered local preacher in the M.C.C.A (Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas). She remained active in the church even after migrating to the United States in 2010.
