At age 13, determined to build a better life for herself, she left to pursue secondary and technical education in the area of horticulture and viticulture as well as bookkeeping. After finishing her schooling in Romania, Dumitra relocated to the city of Galati. She worked as a team leader for a food canning factory and as a distribution manager for a meat processing plant.
She moved to the United States in 1991 and started building her new life as an immigrant. She worked at Broward College as an Accounting Specialist for 16 years, from 1997 until her retirement in 2013. A great believer in education, she took part-time courses at Broward College until she completed her Associate Degree in Accounting Technology.
Dumitra was married to Ion-Vasile Negoita on October 5, 1968. They remained married until her husband’s passing on April 4, 2016.
Dumitra is survived by daughter Mihaela Metianu, son-in-law Ion Metianu, and her grandchildren Andrei Metianu (21) and Nicholas Metianu (15). She also leaves behind many extended family members and close friends in Romania and in Florida, USA.
