Gertrude U. Brown was born on December 20, 1925 to Albert Bacchus and Gladys (Browne) Bacchus in Richland Park Saint Vincent W.I. "Gertie" as she was know by her friends and loved ones, was educated in St. Vincent going as far as Glen High School. She spent her early years in St. Vincent before moving to Aruba to marry Benjamin Brown on September 15, 1951. During this time, the first son Carlos Brown was born in Aruba. Reginald Browne and Sheila Browne were born in St. Vincent. Gertie left St. Vincent in 1958 for England to join her husband. Eric Brown was born in England right before her quest for a better life brought her to the United States. The youngest of the five children, Sharon Brown-Foster, was born in the United States.
Always doing what was needed to help provide for her family, Gertie worked a number of jobs during her life time. She was a worker in a candy factory, a seamstress making winter coats for "Vito", in-home babysitting and the hardest job of all, a housewife. To help beautify her home, Gertie's skills and talent in embroidery and knitting could be seen throughout the house. Her doilies, were famous and were displayed everywhere. This love of crafts kept her happy and busy in her twilight years. Part of her legacy will be her "cherry cake" and "yellow pea's soup". These will be made and passed down from generation to generation but never equaled.
Gertie was a member of Trinity C.M.E Church in Brooklyn, New York. She was a member of the senior choir and served on various committees cooking and serving the congregation and community. Her strong belief and faith in God has served her well throughout her life. It has given her the strength and resolve to face what life had handed her headed on without wavering to the very end.
She is survived by her five children, Carlos Brown, Reginald Browne, Sheila Browne, Eric Brown and Sharon Brown-Foster. Two sisters, Camelita Monseque, Germaine Bacchus. Two brothers, Creighton Bacchus, Hubert Bacchus. Nine grandchildren, Erica Neal, Robert Brown, Nicole Brown, Kenneth Brown, Stephanie Yorke, Jarret Brown, Danielle Foster, Ricardo Browne and Mykal Foster. On March 15, 2013, our dearly beloved departed this world to seek better pastures. Gertie will always be in our hearts.
