

Gloria Thornhill Whyte affectionately called Aunt G, was born on December 24, 1928, to Thomas Alexander and Edith Irene Pearson in the quiet community of McField, Westmoreland, Jamaica. She passed away on July 18, 2024, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Gloria received her early education at Porter’s Mountain Elementary School. In 1955, she graduated from the University College Hospital of the West Indies, Jamaica as part of the first batch of nurses trained at the hospital. After graduating, she remained on staff for four years before moving on to the Montego Bay General Hospital.
In 1961, Gloria migrated to the United States and continued her nursing career at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York as an Operating Room nurse, where she worked for 35 years. On August 14, 1976, she married Harry E. Whyte (who preceded her in death in 2020).
Gloria was a devout member of the Pembroke Rd. Baptist Church, now known as Hope Missionary Baptist Church, located at 7130 Pembroke Rd, Miramar, Florida. She was very involved in her church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and participated in the Women on a Mission Group, Prison Fellowship Group, and Angel Tree, a ministry for children whose parents are incarcerated. This group treated the kids to gifts and treats at Christmas.
Gloria is survived by her son, Patrick Richardson; her sister, Mrs. Daphne Taylor (England); stepsons, Rudyard and Dwayne D. Whyte; stepdaughter, Yvonne Basnight; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Hope Missionary Baptist Church at 10:00 am. Arrangements are entrusted to Fred Hunter’s Funeral Home, Cemeteries, and Crematory.
The family of Gloria Thornhill Whyte extends their heartfelt appreciation for the many acts of kindness, messages of sympathy, and visits during their time of loss. Special thanks to Ms. Inez Brown (former caregiver), her neighbors Owen and Michelle Cooke, Ms. Pauline Rylander, Josette Peat, and Pastor Higgs for their assistance, visits, and care during her illness.
