Henry entered the world on November 23, 1939, in Weston, Georgia. He was the second child born to the late Willie Frank Amos and Mary F. Perry Amos. He was known as “Sug” (short for Sugar) throughout his life. At an early age, Henry was nurtured in the St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Weston, Georgia. This is where he was baptized when he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. The place where his Christian journey began as a lifelong servant of God. He graduated from one of the historic Rosenwald Schools in 1958. Soon afterward he met the former Katie Platt of Shellman, GA. While dating the two realized they each wanted to move to south Florida. They arrived in Miami three weeks apart. He lived with his brother Willie and she lived with her sister Ann. In 1961, after a proper courtship, the young couple was joined in holy matrimony.
To feed his spiritual soul, Henry became a faithful member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, under the pastorship of Rev. Willie Sims. He then moved his membership to the Historic Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. And in 2006 he has ordained a Deacon. He was also a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. Henry worked at the local Winn-Dixie warehouse. And during his spare time, he and his brother Willie cut lawns for extra income. They decided to cut large and lavish lawns as they found the owners paid well. When the employees went on strike at the warehouse, he found a casual position at Hertz Car Rental. They were so impressed with his performance that the company offered him a permanent position. He retired from Hertz after a 35-year career. During that same time, he also worked at the Dixie Equipment Company, where he mastered his God-given gift of mechanics and machinery. Henry used those skills and opened his own business. The entrepreneur named his business “Henry’s Lift Truck Repair.” Henry was a family man and nothing made him happier than to know that his family was happy. He was a calm, even-tempered person. He was also compassionate, generous, and committed to whatever he encountered. All he ever wanted was to provide for, and take care of, his family.
His love and legacy will live forever in the hearts of his wife of 61 years, Katie Amos, and daughter Tangela Amos, Miami, FL; granddaughter LaToya Fields, Albany, GA; devoted brothers: Walter Clyde Amos, Webster, GA, and Malik (Karen) Saleem, Atlanta, GA; dedicated sisters: Lola A. Francis, Richmond Heights, FL, Johnnie A. Adderley, Tulsa, OK, and Georgia A. Humphrey, Columbus, GA. Others cherishing his memories include his dear cousins, sweet nieces, loyal nephews, wonderful friends, former customers, and church members. And his childhood friend, Foye Stevens, Weston, GA; his Daughter-in-law, Tammi Amos, Orlando, FL; and his furry 4-footed companion “Max.” Henry was preceded in death by his son Roland Kenneth Amos and grandson Joshua Henry Huggins; brothers: Willie Amos and Alphonso Amos; and sisters: Mable Amos, Thelma A. Davis, and Alvonia A. Bennett.
