Herman Everton Douglas was born on September 15, 1947, in Kingston, Jamaica, to Melvyn “Jiggs” and Cecille “Maggie” Douglas. As the second-born of the seven children they shared, Herman naturally grew into the role of leader and protector, a responsibility he carried with quiet strength, loyalty, and love throughout his life.
Upon graduating from Jamaica College, Herman emigrated to the United States to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology in 1972.
While living in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, Herman met Della, and they married in 1971. Together, they welcomed a son, Christopher, and Herman lovingly embraced the role of stepfather to Robyn.
After completing his studies, Herman briefly returned to Jamaica to assist his father with the family welding business. Herman ultimately returned to the states, where he pursued various entrepreneurial endeavors, including opening up a nightclub in Silver Spring, Maryland.
During his years in the Washington, D.C. area, Herman developed a deep and lasting interest in Ethiopia. After the end of his first marriage, life led him to travel there, where he met Roman. They later married and were blessed with a daughter, Sitota.
In 1996, after spending over 25 years in the DMV area, Herman relocated to South Florida, which became his permanent home. He took immense pride and joy in raising Sitota as a single father, often sharing humorous stories and cherished photos celebrating her growth and achievements throughout the years.
In 2014, Herman opened his heart to love once more and married Angella. Through this union, he gained stepchildren and grandchildren, all of whom he embraced and loved deeply. His granddaughter, Emma, held a particularly special place in his heart.
Herman devoted himself to honest, hardworking living and ultimately found a professional home at The Home Depot, where he served as an appliance specialist. He spent over 18 years at the Davie, Florida location before retiring in 2023.
Herman loved music, writing poetry, fishing, and a good drink. He always dreamed of returning to Ethiopia one day. Caring for others was deeply fulfilling to his soul. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and took great joy in cooking delicious meals for his family and friends.
At the beginning of new year, Herman fell ill and remained hospitalized until God called him home on Thursday, January 29, 2026, with his wife and daughter by his side. Though deeply missed, Herman’s love, legacy and memory will forever remain in our hearts.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Jiggs and Maggie Douglas; his beloved sister Audrey; and brothers-in-law Dave, Tony, and Victor.
Herman’s legacy will continue through his loving wife, Angella; children Christopher and Sitota (Edward); stepchildren Robyn (Aubrey), Karlene (Steavian), Samantha, Katherina, and Delarno; siblings Hyacinth, Lorna, Desmond, Melvyn (Carol), Everard (Charita); Carl; Noel; Derrick; and Cheryl; grandchildren Tsehai, Edward III, Omari, Taylen, Omoya, and Emma; and host of dear nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends both near and far away.
