
James was born in Germantown, Ohio to David and Ruth Caldwell on June 29, 1946. He went to school at Germantown High School, and earned his high school diploma while serving in the military. He married Cheryl Ann Millard on January 26, 1980 in Dania, Florida. He worked as an elevator service technician for several elevator companies for more than 30 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Air Force. He was a 33rd Degree Mason, member of Eureka Lodge #269 in Dania, Florida, and was Worshipful Master of the lodge in 1981. He also became a Shriner and was a member of the Mahi Shrine in Miami, Florida for several years. He enjoyed being a member of American Legion Post 321 in Cooper City, where he kept company with other members, sharing stories and shooting pool.
James is preceded in death by his father and mother, David and Ruth Caldwell, and by his brothers, Philip Wehrung and Dennis Caldwell.
James is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Denise Caldwell; sons, Robert Ashbaugh and Timothy Harrison; brothers, Robert Caldwell and Charles Caldwell; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ken and Mary Bieber. James had one granddaughter, four great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family of James wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and other devoted staff of the Broward VA Outpatient Clinic and the entire staff of the Miami VA Hospital, who took excellent care of James, providing all his needs up until the very end of his life. We extend our sincere thanks also to the Vitas Healthcare hospice team who gently and lovingly cared for him at home, and who made it possible him and his wife to share his last days together. Thanks also to good neighbors and great friends who visited and continue to lend their support to Cheryl.
