…passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 14, 2023, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is survived and deeply missed by his wife, Ann (née Tucker) and son Tyrone (Kate). Predeceased by his son Mark in 1995 and parents Maurice and Ivy McGann. Joe was the youngest of six children. Predeceased by brother Keith McGann (Joan), and sister Maxine Macmillan (Hugh Chesley). He is survived by brother Aubrey McGann (Monica); sisters Ruth Costa (Michael [deceased]) and Maureen McGann.
Joe was an accomplished concert tenor who started his singing career at a very early age in Jamaica. At the young age of 16, Joe was awarded second place in the Jamaica Music Festival… even though he was competing against seasoned professionals!
After graduating from Excelsior College, Joe did an extensive tour overseas and returned to Jamaica to perform lead tenor roles in Jamaica’s Little Theatre productions, pantomimes, and operas. He was chosen to perform for the newly wedded Prime Minister, Sir Alexander Bustamante, and Lady Bustamante. Joe’s musical talent was so well received that he was subsequently awarded a scholarship by the Government of Jamaica to further his studies at the Jamaica School of Music. While there, he studied under the tutelage of Madame Roma d’Oyen-Fitchett, an Italian born opera singer.
During his years at the School of Music, Joe was chosen to perform for many of the island’s visiting dignitaries. Among them were Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother, and Her Royal Highness Princess Alice (mother of Prince Phillip).
Over his singing career, Joe was regarded as Jamaica’s best loved tenor and came to be known as “The Golden Voice of Jamaica”.
In 1966, Joe left Jamaica under contract to the Avenue Road Church in Toronto, Canada as Staff Soloist. While in Canada, Joe met Ann and, after a very short courtship, they were married in 1967 and had two sons, Tyrone and Mark – and they were his world!
After leaving Canada, Joe and family spent time in both Jamaica and Bermuda before emigrating to the United States and settling in San Antonio, Texas. While living in Texas, Joe joined his brother Aubrey’s Evangelical Association as Staff Soloist. This took Joe, Ann, and the boys all over the United States accompanying Aubrey and his wife Monica, while travelling the country by Motorhome! Each week was a different city and a new adventure!
In 1976, Aubrey was invited to preach in Hong Kong and the Philippines and, of course, Joe was engaged as his soloist. At that time, Joe had the privilege of singing at a breakfast event for the President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, and his wife Imelda.
In 1994, Joe and Ann returned to Bermuda. Having retired somewhat from singing, Joe put his design talents to use and opened Closet Creations where he designed and built custom closets for many of the island’s residents, including one of Bermuda’s world-renowned actors and his actress wife! In fact, throughout Bermuda, Joe was affectionately known as “The Closet Man”!
After 27 years operating Closet Creations, Joe’s health started to fail and he and Ann retuned to the U.S. to be near their son Ty and his wife Kate, once again taking up residency until his passing. Joe and Ann would have celebrated 56 years of marriage on December 2, 2023!
Joe was predeceased by his Father-in-Law Frederick Tucker and Mother-in-Law Madge Tucker of Somerset, Bermuda. Joe also leaves to cherish his memory, Step-Granddaughter Kathryn Tremblay (Michael), Step-Great-Granddaughter Audrey, Brother-in-Law Reginald Tucker (Emily), Sister-in-Law Janet Williams (Charles [deceased]); Nieces: Michelle Confer (Pete), Shelly Malone (David), Joann Miller (Joe), Eleanor Reed (Grant), Reneé Wilson (Greg), Scheraine Basden (Richard).
