A memorial service will be held at noon on Thursday, September 8, at Park Road Presbyterian Church, 500 N Park Rd, Hollywood, FL 33021.
June was born on January 14, 1926, in Florence, South Carolina. She was the youngest daughter of Arthur Cleveland and Dorothy King Renfrow. June spent her childhood in Charlotte, North Carolina and Mt. Airy, North Carolina.
She attended Queens College in Charlotte and then studied elementary education at Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, North Carolina. Soon after graduating in 1947, June accepted a teaching position at Hollywood Hills Elementary School in Florida.
June believed teaching was her calling in life and taught for more than 35 years in Broward County schools. She was a creative, innovative teacher who went beyond traditional curriculum to give her students fun, practical and memorable learning experiences, like growing a garden and preparing a meal from its harvest and publishing a school newspaper. In 1981, June was honored to be named Broward County Middle School Teacher of the Year.
If teaching was June’s true calling, music was her passion (closely followed by animals). She sang with a beautiful alto voice, played and taught ukulele, wrote songs, and performed at church and special events. One of her biggest joys over the past 14 years was hosting a Friday afternoon singalong, where the “June Bugs” would gather at June’s house to sing and play music under the direction of her close friend and minister, Rev. John Moore, minster of music at First Presbyterian Church Coral Springs.
June was also a member of the First Church of God of Hollywood, where she was involved in that church’s music ministry for several years.
June is survived by her three children, Kyle Pierce (Betsy) of Shreveport, Louisiana; Patricia Pierce (Jo) of Clearwater, Florida; and Russell Pierce of Hollywood, Florida. We will miss our mom’s laugh, sense of humor, and vibrant personality.
Other survivors include granddaughter Tara Cioci (Danny), of Davie, Florida; two great-granddaughters, Layla Cioci and Olivia Cioci, of Davie; granddaughter Jenna (Derek) of Hollywood, Florida; and grandson Jonathan of Hollywood, Florida.
June is also survived by her special friend, Kelby Drews of Milo, Maine. At age six, Kelby started learning ukulele from June, and they shared a strong, loving bond for more than 15 years.
In addition to her mother and father, June was preceded in death by her first husband, Joe D. Pierce, of Hollywood, FL; second husband, Jack Bullock, also of Hollywood; and five brothers and sisters.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to June’s caretakers and friends Bert and Lola, who provided her with love, support, and comfort for the past ten years. Both June and her family consider Bert and Lola family. Thanks also go to Robin Puentes of Fort Lauderdale, who, for the past two years, visited and sang with June several hours a week.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in June’s memory may be made to either Broward County Humane Society; the Music Ministry at First Presbyterian Church Coral Springs; or to the First Church of God of Hollywood.
