Leks or Lekha, as he was affectionately called, was born in rural Debe, Trinidad, to the late Pundit Bal Gangadhar and Mrs. Deokidai Gangadhar. He attended Mohess Road Hindu School and then Naparima College in San Fernando. He graduated as a Primary School teacher and pursued this career for a few years before migrating to Washington, DC, USA in 1968. Leks set a good example by joining the United States Air Force, and during his service, he was able to complete his Degree in Journalism and Communication at the University of the District of Columbia. Following his departure from the Air Force, he worked in real Estate and teaching.
Lekdath was married to Parbette Spangler, who preceded him in death in 2019. He is the Stepfather to Rik, Erik, and the late Dirk, all of whom cared for him deeply. He was intimately involved in all aspects of their lives, and they, in turn, reciprocated by caring for him and showing him immense love.
Leks was happiest spending time with family and friends. He loved travelling, reading, and sharing a tipple with friends. His laugh would famously fill the room. Together with Pari, they were a legendary supercouple, renowned for their kindness, generosity, and were always available to lend a helping hand.
Lekdath was preceded in death by two of his brothers, Umardath and Saindath, and is survived by two brothers, Krishnadath and Simbhoodath, and his sisters-in-law, Jaiwantee, Suhindra, and Siewmatie; and two sisters, Hema and Chandra, and brothers-in-law, Harry and Ranji. He is survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews who all loved him deeply.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at Fred Hunter's Funeral Home. Family viewing at 9:00 am, Service according to Hindu Rites at 10:00 am, and Cremation at 12:30 pm.
The Gangadhar and Smith family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to all who assisted in caring for Leks as he transitioned through his illness.
As we say goodbye, we remember Lekha not only as a devoted husband, caring brother, guiding stepfather, beloved uncle, and loyal friend but also as a man whose kind nature and generous heart left a lasting imprint on every life he touched. His quiet strength, warm heart, and selfless and free spirit will continue to inspire us. Though he is no longer with us in body, the love he gave and the good he did will remain – echoing through our memories and the lives he helped shape.
